Khan made her Bollywood debut with the controversial movie Nishabd, starring opposite legendary Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan in 2007. Khan was nominated by Film Fare awards for the best debutant that year.

She has also acted along well-known Indian actors Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar.

Khan was born in New York and brought up in London before moving to Mumbai.

Her death has hit the Indian film industry hard with many of them expressing shock and disbelief at the news. Many of them took to twitter to express their grief. Some of the Tweets by Indian actors are as follows:

Filmmaker-choreographer Farah Khan: "Can't register that Jiah is no more... Worked with her in Housefull and she was so beautiful and such a good soul. Too young to go Jiah."

Though the exact reason for Khan's death is not known, reports suggest that she has been depressed for quite some time in the past few months.

The actress's mother Rabiya Amin, told police that Khan did not see a bright future in film industry and wanted to take up a career in Interior designing.

Amin said that Khan was recently rejected at an audition in Hyderabad city of Andhra Pradesh state and was upset following her failure.

Ram Gopal Verma, the director of her debut film, tweeted on Tuesday suggesting that Khan felt like a failure over all and was depressed.

"The last time I met her Jiah told me that everyone around her makes her feel like a failure," Verma tweeted.
