J.K. Rowling Denies Epstein Link: DOJ Files Reveal He Was Actually Blocked from Harry Potter Opening
DOJ Emails Reveal Publicist Obtained Tickets, Epstein Stopped at Door

J.K. Rowling has dismissed claims she invited Jeffrey Epstein to a Harry Potter event as 'beyond silly' after the convicted sex offender's name surfaced in newly released Department of Justice files.
The documents, made public on 30 January under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, contained an invitation to the 2018 Broadway premiere of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child bearing Rowling's name alongside the show's producers.
Critics on social media jumped to conclusions, accusing the author of personally extending an invitation to Epstein a full decade after his 2008 conviction for procuring a child for prostitution. But a closer look at the email trail paints a very different picture. The DOJ documents reveal Epstein was not only uninvited by Rowling but was actually blocked from entering the venue on the night.
'This is beyond silly. Neither I, nor anybody on my team, ever met, communicated with, or invited Jeffrey Epstein to anything,' Rowling wrote on X on 2 February, responding to a user who had claimed she was 'sending invitations to Epstein 10 years after he was convicted,' Variety reported.

How Epstein Got the Tickets
The invitation that sparked the controversy was a standard template sent to guests arranged by the show's production team. Two days before the 22 April 2018 premiere, showbiz publicist Peggy Siegal emailed Playground Entertainment head Colin Callender asking for tickets on behalf of what she called 'a very important friend of mine that does a lot for me.' She did not name Epstein in her initial request, according to Deadline.
Callender agreed and handed the matter to his team. Only then did Siegal reveal who the tickets were for, writing to a Playground employee: 'Please deal with Jeffrey Epstein's assistant.' The tickets were subsequently couriered to Epstein's Manhattan residence at 9 East 71st Street.
Callender told Deadline he was never made aware of Epstein's identity and stressed that the financier was not on the original 1,600-name guest list for the opening night.
Turned Away at the Door
Despite securing the tickets, Epstein never made it inside. The emails show he was stopped at the venue because his name did not appear on the door list. The morning after the premiere, he emailed Siegal with the news. 'Couldnt get in,' he wrote. 'No biggy, but thought you should know.'
Siegal was livid. She fired off an angry email to Playground, calling the incident 'terribly upsetting' and 'incredibly embarrassing,' describing Epstein as 'a captain of international finance and a close personal friend.' She demanded an apology note. Callender told Deadline that no one at Playground apologised.
No Evidence of Any Relationship

A separate document in the DOJ files suggests Epstein did not know Rowling at all. In a May 2016 email, an unknown individual asked Epstein to arrange an introduction to the author. 'Jeffrey, as you always know the top people in every fiels [sic], maybe you could help me: I want to meet JK Rowling. Could you help me?' the sender wrote, according to the Edinburgh Evening News. The fact that someone was asking Epstein for an introduction implies no existing connection between him and Rowling.
The DOJ release comprised more than 3 million pages, 180,000 images, and 2,000 videos related to Epstein. The documents were made public under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, signed into law on 19 November 2025. Numerous high-profile figures from Prince Andrew to Elon Musk have found themselves caught up in the fallout, many despite having no documented connection to the late financier, MEAWW reported.
Siegal, who the New York Times once called 'Hollywood's secret weapon,' faced significant professional consequences for her long association with Epstein. She later told interviewers she did not grasp the full scale of his crimes at the time. The 2018 emails show she personally vouched for him to gain access to a family event tied to one of the most beloved children's franchises in history. Epstein was arrested again in July 2019 on federal sex trafficking charges and died in his jail cell the following month.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child continues its run at the Lyric Theatre on Broadway.
