The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board revealed on Wednesday (May 29) that wrestling, squash and baseball/softball had been chosen for a shortlist of sports vying to be included in the 2020 Games.

"I will now announce the sports that are on the shortlist. They are wrestling, baseball and softball," International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams said, adding that squash was also on the list.

In September the IOC will vote to decide which of the three will take part in the 2020 Olympic Games.

The IOC surprisingly dropped wrestling from the list of core sports for the 2020 Games in February, forcing it to join the group of candidate sports hoping for the place. By being included in the shortlist wrestling has cleared the first hurdle towards its reinstatement. After being dropped several Olympic wrestlers returned their medals to the IOC in protest, the president of the international federation resigned and the sport has now made changes to its scoring to make bouts more exciting.

Five other sports, karate, wakeboarding, sports climbing, wushu and roller sports, did not make the cut, meaning their chance of Olympic inclusion must wait another four years.
