AT&T Unlocking Off-Contract iPhones: How to Get your iPhone Unlocked [GUIDE]
As promised, AT&T began unlocking off-contract iPhones from Sunday, 8 April. The carrier has been busy processing user requests over the past four days, according to Cydiahelp. Meanwhile, a lot of users are apparently confused about employing a proper working method for unlock.
Pre-Requisites
The procedure is quite simple - you need to be eligible for the unlock process with a valid AT&T account that is out of contract. Besides, the user needs to ensure that all due bill payments have been done, in order to be eligible for this exclusive off-contract service from the carrier.
Unlock Eligibility Process
Users of the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 4 who liev outside the US but are locked on AT&T are required to contact AT&T support and give them the IMEI number. The support staff at AT&T will run random checks on your IMEI and confirm your eligibility for the unlock service. The vast majority of people have already got their iPhones unlocked, following a quick reply from AT&T. However, some users with unconfirmed eligibility, may have to wait up to 72 hours or in the worst case extending up to a week, according to cydiahelp.
Those with confirmed eligibility, can proceed with the unlock procedure without further hassles. For those people in the US, the best bet would be AT&T's online chat support to get the issue sorted in a jiffy.
Unlock Procedure/Steps
People outside the US are required to call AT&T's Call Centre and avail the support of staff to get through the unlock process. Just dial +1-800-288-2020 and your call will be attended to by one of the support executives. Once your authorisation and eligibility are confirmed by AT&T, you will receive an e-mail notification as follows:
"Completing Your Authorized iPhone Unlock
Thank you for contacting AT&T Customer Care about unlocking your iPhone.
We have reviewed your request and confirmed that you are eligible to have the requested iPhone unlocked.
To complete the unlock, simply:
1. Open iTunes on your Mac or PC and verify that you have internet connectivity.
2. Connect your iPhone using the dock connector to USB cable that came with your iPhone.
3. Backup and restore your iPhone using iTunes .

4. After restoring, your iPhone will be unlocked.
