A paedophile was investigated after he sent a letter to Home Secretary Theresa May requesting for sex with children to be legalised.

Philip Kirk, 22, from York was found to have downloaded nearly 1,000 indecent images of children and searched online for child murders and Girl Guide groups.

"I have been a paedophile since the age of 13 and openly a paedophile for the last three years," Kirk wrote in a letter to May.

After being arrested on 5 December, Kirk appeared in court where Judge Stephen Ashurst referred to his case as "extremely disturbing" and his letter a "deluded and dangerous plea," reported The Independent.

Kirk pleaded guilty to 21 charges of acquiring indecent images of children and was sentenced to four years in prison and four on probation.

"[He is] one of the most dangerous individuals I am aware of," said Detective Inspector Shaun Page from the North Yorkshire Police.

Meanwhile, an independent inquiry into the historical child sexual abuse in England and Wales began on 9 July, a year after it was first announced by May in July 2014.

The inquiry was initiated after the growing number of child sex abuse cover-up cases involving politicians and celebrities.
