Thousands of people wearing elaborate costumes are gathering at the Asylum Steampunk Festival in the historic Cathedral city of Lincoln. Now in its seventh year, the event attracts participants from around the globe. Organisers claim the festival is the world's biggest steampunk event.

Steampunk refers to a subgenre of science-fiction that incorporates technology and clothing inspired the technology of the Industrial Revolution and early science-fiction novels by Frankenstein's author Mary Shelley, and Victorian writers such as HG Wells and Jules Verne.

Over four days, steampunk enthusiasts get the chance to show off their creative costumes, attend lectures and fun events, and compete in a variety of quirky sporting pursuits, including a jetpack race.
