The high-energy world of Atlanta's hip-hop scene has been silenced by a tragic discovery in a quiet Milton suburb. Three days after Lil Jon's son, Nathan Smith, was reported missing, his body was found. The 27-year-old popularly known as DJ Slade was dead.

What began as a desperate search for a missing young man ended in heartbreak when divers recovered a body from a local pond. The news has sent shockwaves through the music industry, transforming a missing persons case into a sombre reflection on a life cut short.

Search Ends in Tragic Discovery

Nathan Smith was first reported missing on Tuesday, 3 February 2026. According to the Milton Police Department, Smith ran out of his residence around 6:00 am under what officials described as 'unusual circumstances'. The search intensified throughout the week as authorities revealed that Smith had left his home on foot without a mobile phone. Concerns grew when police suggested he may have been 'disoriented' and in need of medical assistance.

Despite an extensive search involving K-9 units and multiple emergency agencies, no clues were found until Friday. At approximately 11:53 am on Friday, 6 February, divers with the Cherokee County Fire Department discovered a body in a pond within Mayfield Park, situated near Smith's home. Whilst the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office is tasked with the official identification, police confirmed the individual is believed to be Smith. Currently, investigators state there is no indication of foul play, though the investigation remains active.

Lil Jon Confirms Tragic Loss of Son

Following the recovery of the body, Lil Jon—born Jonathan Smith—broke his silence to confirm the passing of his son. He shared a deeply personal statement on social media expressing the profound grief he and Smith's mother, Nicole Smith, were experiencing after losing their child. 'I am extremely heartbroken for the tragic loss of our son, Nathan Smith. His mother [Nicole Smith] and I are devastated', the statement on Instagram read.

The rapper chose to focus on his son's character rather than the circumstances of his disappearance, remembering him for his kindness, talent, passion, and achievements. 'Nathan was the kindest human being you would ever meet. He was immensely caring, thoughtful, polite, passionate, and warmhearted—he loved his family and the friends in his life to the fullest,' the grieving father shared. In his tribute, Lil Jon described Smith as 'an amazingly talented young man; a music producer, an artist and engineer, and a graduate of NYU'. He also thanked the officers who helped the family locate his son.

Lil Jon's relationship with Smith was built on a shared passion for music and a mutual respect that spanned decades. Smith frequently worked alongside his father, contributing to various projects, including the rapper's recent foray into guided meditation albums. In one Instagram post, Smith shared a snap of himself with his father to wish him a happy birthday. In the caption, he wrote that his dad was 'the reason why I do music and love it'.

Lil Jon had nothing but compliments when he spoke about his son in a previous interview. According to him, he was confident with Smith because 'He's a really, really good kid,' adding that he's 'well-mannered and well-behaved'.

When it comes to parenting, the Grammy winner puts emphasis on communication. 'I listen to my son... he can talk to me about anything,' he said. Lil Jon is also a father to Nahara, the one-year-old daughter he welcomed with his girlfriend, Jamila Sozahdah, in 2024.
