Arsenal are tracking Juventus right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner. The Express believes the Gunners are readying a move for the £12m-rated Swiss international, who will provide cover and competition for first choice French right-back Bacary Sagna.

Apart from shoring up the right-back role, Lichtsteiner could have an important role to play in north London if injuries hit any of Arsene Wenger's three first team centre backs - Thomas Vermaelen, Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.

Belgian international Vermaelen, who was not at his best in the latter half of last season, is expected to miss the first few months of the new season with a back problem, leaving only Mertesacker and Koscielny as experienced central defenders. Wenger believes Sagna can cover as a central defender if necessary and if forced to do so, it would leave only Carl Jenkinson as a right-back option.

Lichtsteiner made 28 Serie A appearances last season, scoring four goals and creating two more. The defender, who can also play further up field if necessary and is comfortable on the ball, is highly rated by the Bianconieri.

Nevertheless, the Italian champions are understood to be willing to release the defender, in a move designed to raise funds to bid for Danish international Christian Eriksen. That piece of news will come as a blow to Premier League clubs Tottenham, Everton and Liverpool, whom the Express believes are in the race to sign the Ajax attacking midfielder.

Meanwhile, Juve coach Antonio Conte has reportedly settled on Feyenoord defender Daryl Janmaat as a potential replacement for Lichtsteiner. The 24-year-old Dutch international is available for £7.5m, according to the Express.

The Gunners have been as quiet as they usually are in transfer windows, with a lot of rumours but very little in the way of real signings. The only incoming transfer so far was that of France U21 International Yaya Sanogo, who arrived on a free.

A bid for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has long been discussed and while bids have been made, the Reds' staunch no-sale attitude has stumped Wenger. More importantly, Emirates chiefs have spent so much time pursuing the Uruguayan international that they now have little time to work on signings of a similar status.

The one possible silver lining in Arsenal's summer transfer cloud is report of Brazilian midfielder Luis Gustavo arriving from German and European champions Bayern Munich. A top-class holding midfielder, Gustavo appears to have fallen out of favour at the Allianz Arena since Pep Guardiola took over and a £17.2m bid is reportedly close to completion.
