At least 113 people have been killed and 54 others injured after a deadly blaze ripped through a chicken slaughterhouse in northeast China.

The fire broke out in the early hours of the morning local time at the plant in Mishazi, Jilin province. 300 people work at the plant, with around 100 managing to escape despite being locked in by the gate when the fire escalated. The death toll is likely to rise as bodies continue to be pulled out of the remnants of the factory.

It is believed a fault in the electrical system caused the fire. Workers told China Central television the blaze broke out during a change of shifts and may have started in the locker room.
