Who Is Sally-Anne Bowen? Court Convicts Ex-Teacher for Assaulting 2 Teenage Boys in the 1980s

A former teacher has been convicted of assaulting two teenage boys more than 40 years ago. Sally-Anne Bowen, now 65, was in her 20s when she taught at Christ's College in Finchley, north London.

The jury at Harrow Crown Court deliberated for close to six hours and 30 minutes before reaching its verdict. One of the victims told the court that he had believed he was in a relationship with Bowen. It was only when he became a father that he realised that Bowen was assaulting him.

What Happened in the 1980s?

Gareth (real name withheld) was 14 when he started what he described as a sexual relationship with Bowen. He said they had sex between 20 and 30 times in the course of their relationship, which lasted a few months.

At the time, he thought he was in love with Bowen. Some of the students started spreading the rumors, while adults said he was living the fantasy of many teenage boys.

For Gareth, tt was a mental struggle for 35 years. He later realised that Bowen was not his ex-girlfriend but his abuser. Gareth shared his experience in a four-part podcast.

He told the court he kept the relationship private to 'protect' Bowen, who also asked him not to tell anyone. 'I never, ever spoke to anyone about it,' Gareth said. 'I was always really aware; she drummed it into me.'

Gareth said Bowen was able to continue teaching because he kept quiet: 'Years she got to teach because I remained silent.' Prosecutor Madeleine Wolfe, in her closing argument, said that the assault had 'a real visceral quality to it.'

'There can be no doubt that there was a lasting impact on him,' said Wolfe. 'It's not a schoolboy fantasy, is it? He's started this account in 2014—this has real-life implications for him, remained with him for decades.'

Second Victim's Account

Another complainant said he and Bowen kissed at a cafe after other boys 'goaded' him into doing it. Bowen told the court she didn't remember the boy.

Wolfe also told the jurors: 'It became clear that when she (Bowen) chose him, that when she isolated him into that relationship, it was not in fact a loving relationship—it was nothing but exploitation, frankly. That infuriated him, that there was a general view that because he was a male, he was a lucky boy.'

In denying the complaints against her, Bowen said she could not have had sex with the student because she had an undiagnosed medical condition in the 1980s that made it difficult to have sexual intercourse. She claimed it was painful to do so.

Bowen's partner, Darren Scothbrook, backed Bowen's claim in court. He said sex was 'clearly not enjoyable for her' when they started the relationship in the summer of 1990. Bowen and Scothbrook have been together for 36 years.

However, two medical experts who conducted an internal examination of Bowen said that the 'alleged sexual activities were feasible' but could be painful.

Bowen's Defence: 'He Had a Crush'

It has been 40 years, so the question arises: why would Gareth still pursue the case against Bowen? The former teacher told the court: 'I don't know why he is making these allegations. I have no idea what is going on at this point.'

'I think he certainly had a crush on me at school,' Bowen also said. Sentencing is scheduled for 20 November 2026.
