Support for James Van Der Beek’s family fundraiser climbs past $1.5m @vanderjames/Instagram

James Van Der Beek's family fundraiser has surged past its initial target in the days following the actor's death, as tributes from fans and fellow celebrities continue to circulate online alongside renewed attention on his illness and final months.

A GoFundMe set up by friends to support his widow Kimberly and their six children had raised approximately £1.5 million ($2 million) as of writing, exceeding its £1.1 million ($1.5 million) goal with tens of thousands of donations recorded. The page describes the financial strain caused by his long cancer battle, noting that medical costs and care left the family struggling to cover living expenses and maintain stability at home.

Fundraiser Gains Momentum as Tributes Continue

Organisers wrote that contributions would help with everyday bills, education costs and housing needs while the family grieves. In a recent update, they also asked the media and public to respect the family's privacy during what they called a painful season, saying the support had been 'a light' during their loss

The actor, best known to many viewers for Dawson's Creek, died on 11 February at the age of 48 following complications from Stage III colorectal cancer, according to previously reported details and medical coverage of his diagnosis. His wife confirmed his passing in a brief Instagram message, saying he met his final days 'with courage, faith, and grace' while asking for peaceful privacy as the family mourned.

Friends close to the family have suggested the financial difficulties were compounded by the prolonged nature of his illness. Reporting around the fundraiser notes that resources were heavily affected by treatment and care expenses, leaving Kimberly and the children facing what supporters described as an uncertain period ahead.

Tributes tied to the campaign have also highlighted his work beyond acting, including advocacy around perinatal health and family-focused initiatives mentioned by donors posting messages of support on the page itself.

Many comments reference his long-running television roles and cultural impact, particularly from viewers who grew up watching his early career.

Rising Awareness of Colorectal Cancer

While the fundraising effort has drawn most of the public attention this week, coverage of his illness has resurfaced alongside it. Medical reporting noted that colorectal cancer has increasingly affected younger adults, with research showing rising mortality rates among people under 50 in recent years. Van Der Beek had first been diagnosed in 2023 and later spoke publicly about dealing with the condition with the support of his family.

Big Names Who Have Extended Help

Those who worked with Van Der Beek have described his final period as focused largely on family life. In past interviews he often spoke about fatherhood as central to his identity, calling it humbling and unpredictable while emphasising the joy of watching his children support one another, remarks that have since been widely recirculated in memorial coverage.

Some prominent figures in the industry have joined forces to extend their support to the bereaved family during this challenging time, helping to surpass the £1.1 million target.

A significant portion of the funds has been contributed by the general public, while the late actor's celebrity friends have also made generous donations.

Among them is actress Zoe Saldana, who recently reached the milestone of becoming the highest-grossing film actor of all time. Saldana has reportedly contributed a monthly stipend of about £1,800.

Other substantial donations have come from film director Steven Spielberg and his wife Kate Capshaw, who have given around £18,000. US filmmaker Jon M. Chu is said to have donated roughly £7,200, while Danielle Marquez Levinson, the wife of Hollywood producer Steve Levinson, has also contributed about £7,200. Fashion designer Tracy Robbins has given close to £3,600, and talent agent Kevin Huvane has likewise donated around £3,600.

Steven Spielberg and his wife Kate Capshaw donated around £18,000 to Van der Beek's GoFundMe.

Supporters involved in the fundraiser say the campaign is intended to ease practical burdens so the family can focus on grieving and adjusting in the months ahead.

As the total continues to climb, organisers have reiterated that the family is not making further public statements for now, requesting space while they mourn privately.
