Macklemore Faces Petition To Be Dropped From Ed Sheeran Tour After Concertgoers Allegedly Walk Out Over Political Speech

Macklemore is facing calls to be removed from Ed Sheeran's US tour after using his opening set to deliver a strongly pro-Palestinian political message that reportedly prompted some concertgoers to walk out.

The controversy erupted during Sheeran's shows at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on 4 and 5 September, with an Israeli-American organisation now petitioning for Macklemore to be dropped from the remaining dates.

The rapper went viral after he used his opening performance to address the war in Gaza and the wider Israel-Palestine conflict. Wearing a keffiyeh, the rapper told the MetLife Stadium crowd that he wanted people in Gaza and the occupied West Bank to know they had not been forgotten.

He then repeatedly called for a 'Free Palestine' before performing his protest song 'Hind's Hall,' which was accompanied by imagery connected to Gaza and pro-Palestinian demonstrations. He also spoke about other international issues, including Cuba, Congo, Sudan and Iran, as well as criticising US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Macklemore has been outspoken about the conflict for several years, meaning the political nature of his performance was not entirely new. However, the size of the audience at the Sheeran shows put his message in front of tens of thousands of concertgoers.

Some Concertgoers Reportedly Walked Out

The performance has divided people who attended the concerts, with some audience members saying they walked out after Macklemore's political speech.

A report said that some concertgoers described leaving because they had not expected what they viewed as a political rally during a music event. Others accused Macklemore of antisemitic rhetoric, while supporters defended his decision to use a major platform to speak about human rights and the war in Gaza.

Israeli-American Council Launches Petition

The controversy escalated when the Israeli-American Council launched a petition calling for Macklemore to be removed from the remaining dates of Sheeran's Loop Tour.

The organisation argued that fans had purchased tickets to a concert rather than a political event. Its petition called on Sheeran and his management to remove Macklemore and asked whether his speech, visuals and performance of 'Hind's Hall' had been approved in advance.

The petition does not publicly display its number of signatures, so its level of support cannot currently be independently established. The campaign is nevertheless putting additional pressure on Sheeran's team as the tour continues.

Ed Sheeran Has Yet to Publicly Respond

The controversy has also placed Ed Sheeran in an awkward position because Macklemore was performing as part of his tour rather than at an independent event. MetLife Stadium's official event listing confirms that Macklemore is among the special guests on Sheeran's Loop Tour, which has scheduled shows across the United States.

Some fans argued online that music has historically been used as a platform for activism and that audiences are free to disagree with an artist's views.
