Norwegian Olympian Publicly Admits Cheating on Girlfriend After Winning Olympics Medal
Olympian Sturla Holm Laegreid admits cheating during live medal interview

The transition from the finish line to the post-race interview is usually reserved for technical analysis or celebrations of national pride. Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Laegreid, however, took an interview after his Olympic win as an opportunity to confess his infidelity, hoping to get back with his ex-girlfriend. The athlete confessed to cheating on the love of his life during a live broadcast. However, the reactions on social media were a mix of surprise and disappointment.

'Social Media Suicide'
Laegreid was emotional after winning a bronze medal in men's 20km biathlon. However, instead of crying tears of joy for his victory, he broke down as he reflected on how his relationship with his girlfriend of six months ended a week ago due to his unfaithfulness.
'There is something I want to share with someone who may not be watching today,' he told Norwegian network NRK, as reported by National World. 'Half a year ago, I met the love of my life. The world's most beautiful and nicest person. Three months ago, I made the mistake of my life and cheated on her, and I told her about that a week ago. This has been the worst week of my life.'
When asked why he decided to publicly discuss his infidelity, the Olympic medallist admitted he was desperate to win her back. 'I'm not ready to give up,' he said. 'I hope that committing social suicide might show how much I love her. I'm taking the consequences for what I've done. I regret it with all my heart.'
Laegreid wasn't afraid of the backlash because, according to him, he had 'nothing to lose'. The Olympian added that he had the 'gold medal in life', but he only had his eyes on her because 'sports has come second these last few days'. 'Today I made the choice to tell the world what I did so maybe there's a chance that she will see what she really means to me—maybe not, but I don't want to think I didn't try everything to get her back,' he added.

Why Fans Believe the Biathlete's Infidelity Scandal Is Unforgivable
The public reaction to the confession was swift and largely critical, with many viewers questioning the timing and appropriateness of the venue. Some social media users seemed to poke fun at the irony of his profession. 'He's a biathlete. How's he going to stick with one woman when he can't even pick a sport,' one wrote on Reddit.
Others were less humorous, suggesting that a public broadcast was a manipulative platform for a private betrayal. Some also didn't think it was wise for Laegreid to discuss his heartbreak and infidelity publicly right after scoring a major victory in the Olympics. 'Turning an Olympic interview into a confession booth doesn't make it honest—it just makes it irreversible,' one wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Meanwhile, others called his move 'desperate'. One also said his ex-girlfriend shouldn't get back with him because he shouldn't have cheated in the first place. Another added that 'cheating is a choice and is wholly preventable'.
