A quiet school day in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, turned into a nightmare on 10 February 2026. The small community is reeling after a shooting left nine people dead and a 12-year-old girl fighting to survive. Maya Edmonds, a student at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, is currently in critical condition.

She suffered gunshot wounds to her head and neck during the violence. While families mourn, people are rushing to support Maya and her mother, Cia Edmonds, to make sure they don't have to face the recovery process alone.

A Tragedy in Tumbler Ridge

This attack in the remote district left deep scars. Authorities confirmed nine people died during the incident, including the suspected shooter, and at least 25 others were hurt. The violence threw the school into chaos, and Maya was among those left with critical injuries.

Emergency teams moved fast to get the young victim out of the area. They airlifted Maya to Vancouver Children's Hospital for emergency surgery on the severe injuries to her head and neck. Her family is now waiting at the hospital and trying to process a reality that feels impossible.

Fighting for Her Life

Maya's future is still uncertain. Doctors are doing everything they can to repair the damage from the gunshot wounds.

Her cousin, Krysta Hunt, who organised the fundraising effort, shared that Maya survived the transport, but her condition is precarious. The family has been told that the timeline for recovery is unknown, leaving them to take each hour as it comes while Maya remains in critical care.

Cia Edmonds, Maya's mother, shared a heart-wrenching update from the hospital, capturing the raw agony of a parent watching their child suffer. 'Today started as any other,' she wrote. 'Now, however, my 12 year old daughter is fighting for her life while they try to repair the damage from a gun shot wound to the head. And one to the neck.'

A Mother's Plea for Prayers

In her emotional statement, Cia expressed a sense of disbelief that such violence could touch their lives. She noted that Maya was 'a lucky one, I suppose', acknowledging the grief of other families who lost loved ones in the same tragedy.

The shock of the event is palpable in her words: 'This doesnt even feel real. I never thought I would be asking for prayers.. but please please, pray for my baby.'

The priority for the family is simply being present for Maya. To help with this, Krysta started a GoFundMe campaign. The goal is to cover living expenses and medical bills so Cia can stay right by her daughter's side without worrying about money.

Community Rallies With Financial Support

People responded to the plea immediately. In a very short time, the fund raised more than $100K. It went way past the initial goal and is providing a necessary lifeline for the Edmonds family.

This financial cushion is intended to support Maya through what is expected to be a long and arduous rehabilitation process.

Krysta emphasised that the funds are strictly to provide relief for Cia and Maya during this devastating time. 'This support will provide support for Maya through her recovery. And allow for Cia to be by her side without financial concern,' she stated on the fundraising page.

The family has promised to provide updates as Maya's condition evolves, expressing deep gratitude for the kindness of strangers. 'We couldn't do it without your support,' Krysta added.
