The world's best surfers battled some of the world's most dangerous waves for what many are calling the best finals day in the history of professional surfing.

Gabriel Medina narrowly beat Kelly Slater to win the Billabong Pro Tahiti 2014, in 12-to-15 foot barreling waves at Teahupoo on the French Polynesian island.

Eleven-time world surfing champion Slater scored a perfect ten on his way to the final, but the Brazilian surfer finished just 0.03 points ahead of his American rival.

AFP photographer Gregory Boissy captured the surfers riding the massive turquoise barrel waves.
