Kylian Mbappé Named on List of 26 Alleged Kidnap Targets Linked to Teen Accused of Running Gang From Prison in France

An 18-year-old already in custody has been accused of continuing to direct a kidnapping network from his prison cell using a smartphone, with Kylian Mbappé's name found among 26 potential targets.

French investigators say the suspect, identified only as Clément L. and known online as 'Lester Z,' was formally charged on 21 August in Nanterre over an alleged campaign of home invasions and abduction plots targeting wealthy figures.

The case, first detailed by Le Parisien on 2 September 2026, places the Real Madrid forward at the centre of an investigation into a criminal network the teenager is accused of steering from his prison cell.

The Suspect Behind the Alias 'Lester Z'

Clément L. was arrested on 19 August as he left a courthouse in Bobigny, where he had been due to face trial on an unrelated procuring charge that was postponed. At the time, he was free under judicial supervision.

Two days later, on 21 August, he was formally charged in Nanterre with procuring and organised robbery, and placed in pre-trial detention and solitary confinement at Villepinte prison in Seine-Saint-Denis, according to Le Parisien's reporting.

Detectives from the Brigade de Répression du Banditisme (BRB), the Paris police unit that tackles organised crime, allege he continued issuing orders to associates from custody using Snapchat under the pseudonym 'Lester Z.'

How Investigators Traced the Network

The inquiry began with a botched robbery. On 25 April 2026, three men posing as delivery couriers approached a watchmaker's home in Neuilly-sur-Seine, but fled after he refused to open the door, leaving behind an empty box, according to Le Parisien's reporting.

Nine days later, on 4 May, two armed men robbed the same watchmaker's Paris shop, Nos Montres, of roughly €150,000 in watches before escaping on scooters. One was caught within the half-hour after crashing.

Forensic evidence, including prints allegedly left on the discarded box, led the BRB to Clément L., according to Le Parisien. Searching two mobile phones seized from his cell, officers say they found a list of 26 addresses and personal details, allegedly compiled as targets for abduction or home invasion.

The individuals on the list reportedly included jewellers, a Turkish-born meat wholesaler based in Val-d'Oise, a Chinese wholesaler from Paris's 19th arrondissement, a rap artist, and Mbappé, whose profile made him the most prominent name uncovered.

Investigators believe the alleged plots, whether carried out or still in preparation, span 11 April to 19 August 2026 across Neuilly-sur-Seine, Saint-Brice-sous-Forêt in the Val-d'Oise, and Santenay in the Côte-d'Or.

Mbappé's Name and What It Does and Does Not Confirm

Nothing in the reporting so far indicates any attempt was made on Mbappé, who continues to play for Real Madrid and had not been contacted by anyone connected to the alleged plot. Investigators describe his inclusion as part of a list of prospective, wealthy targets rather than evidence of an operation set in motion against him specifically.

Mbappé's profile, among the most recognisable in French football, has been cited by investigators as an obvious reason his name would surface on such a list. He has featured prominently on the pitch since joining Real Madrid in 2024, and passed 100 appearances for the club in April 2026, having scored 85 goals, according to figures published by Real Madrid.

Clément L. has disputed being the network's ringleader, telling investigators he acted only as an intermediary passing instructions between another party and those allegedly carrying out the operations, according to Le Parisien.

He has also reportedly complained about conditions in solitary confinement, where he says he is held alongside inmates he described as dangerous, and said he hopes to resume culinary training and become a chef.

Suspect Fights Detention in Versailles Appeal Hearing

Clément L. and his alleged accomplice, who was released under judicial supervision, appeared this week before the investigating chamber of the Versailles Court of Appeal.

He is contesting both his continued detention and his placement in solitary confinement, according to French media reporting on the hearing.

French authorities have not disclosed whether any of the other 25 individuals allegedly named on the list have been formally notified, nor whether additional arrests are expected.

The full scope of the alleged network, and how many of the plots were operational rather than aspirational, remains to be established as the investigation continues.
