Jaime Faria Starts to Crack as Carlos Alcaraz Completes US Open Comeback

Carlos Alcaraz recovered from a shock first-set loss to Jaime Faria before storming back to beat the Portuguese qualifier 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, 6-2 and keep his US Open title defence alive on Wednesday night.

The defending champion appeared vulnerable when Faria took the opening set at Arthur Ashe Stadium. But Alcaraz responded with a brutal second-set bagel before steadily taking control of the match.

Faria's errors began to pile up as the contest progressed, allowing Alcaraz to seize the initiative and complete a four-set comeback.

The victory also marked another important step in Alcaraz's return from a right-wrist injury that had kept him out of singles competition for 139 days.

Faria Lands the First Blow

Alcaraz arrived at Flushing Meadows with questions surrounding his fitness after his wrist problem forced him to miss several months of the season.

His first-round victory over Roman Safiullin provided an encouraging start to his comeback, but Faria presented a much tougher challenge.

The 23-year-old Portuguese qualifier had already produced a major upset during the North American hard-court swing, defeating Ben Shelton in Cincinnati, before reaching the second round in New York. The US Open had named him as one of the dangerous players capable of testing Alcaraz.

Faria played without fear and took advantage of an unusually loose opening set from Alcaraz.

He eventually closed it out 6-4, leaving the defending champion needing an immediate response.

Alcaraz Turns the Match Around

The response could hardly have been more emphatic.

Alcaraz raced through the second set 6-0, completely changing the momentum of the match. His aggression increased while Faria struggled to reproduce the consistency that had troubled the Spaniard early on.

The third set followed a similar pattern.

Alcaraz continued applying pressure from the baseline and took it 6-3, leaving Faria facing the prospect of surrendering a match he had controlled only a short time earlier.

By the fourth set, the Portuguese player's errors were becoming increasingly costly.

Alcaraz seized the first break of the set as Faria's mistakes mounted, turning a difficult second-round assignment into a contest increasingly under his control.

The Spaniard closed out the fourth set and the match 6-2 to complete the comeback.

Injury Comeback Gains Momentum

For Alcaraz, the result represents more than another Grand Slam victory.

He entered the US Open without playing a competitive singles match since April. His return against Safiullin was his first singles appearance in 139 days, making his presence in New York one of the tournament's biggest storylines.

The match against Faria then provided a different test.

Rather than cruising through another straight-sets victory, Alcaraz had to recover after losing the opening set and withstand an opponent who had briefly seized control.

That response could prove valuable as the tournament progresses.

Defending Champion Advances

Alcaraz is now through to the third round as he attempts to defend the US Open title he won last year.

The Spaniard is also chasing another piece of history. A successful defence would make him the first man since Roger Federer in 2008 to retain the US Open men's singles crown.

His next match is scheduled for Friday, 4 September, when the men's singles third round begins at Flushing Meadows.

After Faria landed the first blow, Alcaraz needed to find a response.

He did more than that.

As the Portuguese qualifier began to crack, the defending champion took control and refused to let go.
