Who Is Sarah Khalifa? Egyptian TV Host Behind 'Mission Impossible' Sentenced to Death in Drugs Case

Egyptian television presenter Sarah Khalifa has been sentenced to death by hanging in Cairo alongside 11 other defendants after being convicted in a drugs case involving more than 750kg of narcotics and raw materials.

Khalifa, 39, best known for presenting 'Mission Impossible', a television programme focused on crime and security issues, has denied the charges and intends to appeal.

Who Is Sarah Khalifa?

Khalifa, 39, is an Egyptian television presenter and businesswoman best known for hosting 'Mission Impossible', a programme focused on crime, security and related issues. She has also run a plastic surgery clinic and an events business and has around 2.5 million followers on Instagram.

Khalifa was arrested in April 2025 as part of the investigation into the alleged drug-trafficking operation. The case concerned allegations that she was involved in a criminal organisation accused of manufacturing and trafficking synthetic drugs.

Why Was Sarah Khalifa Sentenced to Death?

According to Egypt's state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper, Khalifa and 11 other defendants were convicted of forming an organised criminal gang that obtained materials used to manufacture narcotics, with the intention of trafficking them.

Prosecutors said the group imported raw materials from abroad and used residential properties to manufacture drugs.

Authorities reportedly seized more than 750kg of narcotics and raw materials, as well as unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The case involved 28 defendants in total. Nine other defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment, while seven were acquitted, according to reports citing Egyptian media.

Khalifa has consistently denied the allegations against her. During proceedings, she reportedly told authorities that she had never seen drugs until she was photographed with them at an anti-narcotics facility. She also protested her innocence during the court proceedings.

Separate Kidnapping Case Brings Five-Year Term

Khalifa also received a separate prison sentence in another case. Several reports say she and others received a five-year prison sentence in a separate case involving the kidnapping and assault of a young man.

It is important to note that the allegations described in reports about the prosecution's case should not be treated as evidence of wrongdoing beyond the court's verdict, particularly while Khalifa retains the right to appeal.

Sarah Khalifa to Appeal Death Sentence

Khalifa's lawyer has confirmed that he will appeal the death sentence, giving her a further opportunity to challenge the conviction. The verdict remains subject to appeal.

The verdict was initially announced the previous month but was only formally confirmed after the court obtained a religious opinion from Egypt's Grand Mufti. Consultation with the Grand Mufti is a legal requirement in Egyptian capital-punishment cases, although the opinion itself is not binding on the court.

The confirmation therefore represents a stage in the case, but it does not mean Khalifa's death sentence is immediately final or that an execution is imminent, given the appeal process.

Khalifa's appeal will determine the next stage of the legal proceedings. Until that process is completed, the sentence remains subject to judicial review.
