Emporia Elementary Teacher Rebecca Rauber Missing for Days Before Being Found Dead — What We Know So Far
Police say Rauber was last seen on video late Friday night

An extensive search for an Emporia elementary teacher ended in tragedy after Rebecca Rauber was found dead just days after she was reported missing, prompting an ongoing investigation into her final hours amid harsh winter conditions.
Emporia Police confirmed on Sunday that a deceased female located in a wooded area south of West 4th Avenue was Rauber, who had been missing since late Friday night. Authorities said preliminary findings suggest she may have succumbed to hypothermia during a snowstorm that intensified the following day, though the investigation remains active.
When Rebecca Rauber Was Last Seen
Police said newly reviewed surveillance footage shows Rauber in the 700 block of West 4th Avenue at around 11:44 pm on Friday. This video marks the last confirmed sighting of the Emporia elementary teacher before she disappeared.
At the time, temperatures were dropping and a winter storm system was approaching the area. Investigators have not indicated why Rauber was in the area late at night, and no additional movements have been publicly confirmed beyond the surveillance footage.
Search Efforts After She Went Missing
After Rauber was reported missing, a multi-agency search effort was launched involving local and state authorities. Emporia Police worked alongside the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office, Search and Rescue of Kansas, and the Lyon County Communications Center.
Search conditions were complicated by worsening weather. Heavy snowfall on Saturday blanketed parts of Emporia, limiting visibility and access to wooded areas near where Rauber was last seen. Despite the challenging conditions, search teams continued efforts over several days in the hope of locating her alive.
Where Rebecca Rauber Was Found
Police said Rauber's body was discovered approximately 300 yards (274 metres) south of West 4th Avenue, close to the area where she had last been captured on video. She was found in a wooded location and was covered in snow, consistent with the storm that moved through the region.
Detectives secured the area after the discovery and began processing the scene. Authorities have not indicated that foul play is suspected at this stage, but they have emphasised that the investigation is ongoing.

What Police Believe Happened
According to Emporia Police, early indications suggest that Rauber may have died from hypothermia shortly after she went missing. Officials stressed that this assessment is preliminary and subject to confirmation as investigative and forensic work continues.
No final cause of death has been released. Police have not provided details on whether an autopsy has been completed or when further information may be made public.
Community and Official Response
Police confirmed that Rauber's next of kin has been notified. In a statement, the Emporia Police Department thanked the community for its support during the search and acknowledged the efforts of the agencies involved.
'We want to thank our community for the outpouring of care and assistance during this situation,' the department said, adding that numerous resources and hours of manpower were dedicated to locating Rauber. 'Our hearts and prayers are truly with the Rauber family.'
What Remains Unknown
Key questions remain about how Rauber came to be in the wooded area and what occurred between her last confirmed sighting and her death. Investigators have not ruled out any possibilities and say additional updates will be provided as information becomes available.
For now, the case has left the Emporia community grappling with the loss of a local teacher as authorities continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and death.
