The viral success of Heated Rivalry has taken another remarkable turn. Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie, breakout stars of the queer hockey drama, have been named official torchbearers for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

The announcement electrified fans worldwide, blending the show's icy competition with the warmth of Olympic tradition.

From Ice Battles to Olympic Flame

The Canadian streaming service Crave first produced Heated Rivalry, before HBO Max acquired distribution rights in November 2025. The series quickly became a cultural phenomenon, praised for its sharp writing and authentic portrayal of queer athletes.

Hudson Williams plays Shane Hollander, captain of the Montreal Metros, while Connor Storrie, portrays Ilya Rozanov, captain of the Boston Raiders. Their on-ice rivalry masks a decade-long secret romance, adapted from Rachel Reid's Game Changers book series and direct by Canadian filmmaker Jacob Tierney.

Now they're carrying the torch. #HeatedRivalry stars Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie are joining the Olympic Torch Relay for #MilanoCortina2026 as official torchbearers 🔥'

The relay will take place between Friday, 23 January and the opening ceremony on 6 February 2026.

Fans Reaction on the Announcement

The announcement sparked immediate reaction across platforms. Fans expressed disbelief, joy and pride in equal measure at the news.

One fan wrote: 'What are the chances of your ice hockey show blowing up and going viral just weeks before the Winter Olympics? I'm sorry, they were simply destined for success 😭.'

Another admitted: 'Didn't know this was even an option, but hell yeah,' while a third added, 'This feels absolutely insane, but I'm not complaining ❤️😂.'

Some reactions captured the surreal nature of the news. 'I'm so f***ing shocked I started laughing uncontrollably — what do you mean Hudcon are torchbearers for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games, what do you meannnn 😭.'

Amid the disbelief, there was also a strong sense of pride. 'Yesssss! Finally getting the recognition they deserve!' one fan celebrated. Another summed it up neatly: 'From heated rivalry on screen to carrying the torch in real life — the glow-up we deserved.'

Why It Matters for Hockey

Ice hockey has been a fixture of the Winter Olympics for decades, but the cultural impact of Heated Rivalry could boost interest for the sport. The series has already drawn new audiences who may now tune in to Olympic hockey matches, curious to see the real-world counterpart to the drama series. Williams and Stories' roles as torchbearers further cements the show's influence.

The drama follows Hollander and Rozanov's decade-long secret romance, charting their evolution from competitive 'hate-hookups' to a deep, transformative love. The 6-episode series has been praised as a masterclass in the enemies-to-lovers trope, exploring themes of masculinity, identity and authenticity in professional sports.

Heated Rivalry Second Season Confirmed

In December 2025, HBO Max and Crave confirmed that the show will return for a second season. The upcoming season is set to leap forward in time to adapt The Long Game, the sixth instalment in Rachel Reid's acclaimed book series.

Picking up nearly a decade after Shane and Ilya's first meeting, the storyline will explore the heavy emotional burden of their long-term secret and Ilya's burgeoning desire to finally live an authentic life in the public eye. Scripts are currently being finalised, with principal photography scheduled to commence in the summer of 2026.

Fans will have to wait a little longer: the premiere is expected in early 2027.
