Kylie Kelce apologised on the 1 October episode of her 'Not Gonna Lie' podcast for calling Catherine, Princess of Wales, 'Princess Kate,' admitting she had not known the informal title was considered offensive.

Kelce, 34, is the wife of retired National Football League (NFL) centre Jason Kelce and hosts a chart-topping podcast. Her royal correction landed a week after she invited the princess onto the show, and the fix she offered still does not fully match royal convention. The formal royal title is The Princess of Wales, while 'Catherine, Princess of Wales' is commonly used as a reference form.

What Kylie Kelce Actually Said

On the 24 September episode of 'Not Gonna Lie,' Kelce pitched an interview to the royal, saying, 'Princess Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, if you ever wanted to come on and chitchat about some field hockey and maybe kids.' She added that the two women, both former field hockey players, had 'a couple things in common.'

Listeners pushed back, and Kelce addressed it days later. 'I love learning, so I was unaware that calling Princess Catherine Princess Kate was offensive,' she said on 1 October. 'I didn't know that. Now I know that. Now I will proceed accordingly. I apologise for the mistake.'

Why 'Princess Kate' Is Not Correct

Here is the part even the apology missed. Catherine is a princess through her marriage to Prince William, so royal convention does not give her the style 'Princess' followed by her first name. That form is reserved for women who hold the princess title in their own right, such as Princess Charlotte or Princess Anne. The correct formal title is 'The Princess of Wales.'

That means 'Princess Catherine,' the version Kelce reached for in her apology, is also technically wrong, though she did follow it with the accurate 'Princess of Wales.' It is the same mistake the public made for years with Diana, who was widely called 'Princess Diana' despite never holding that title.

The Cambridge Title That No Longer Applies

Kelce's original phrasing carried a second error. Catherine was styled Duchess of Cambridge after her 2011 wedding, but that changed in September 2022, when Queen Elizabeth II died and Prince William was named Prince of Wales.

Catherine has been the Princess of Wales ever since, so 'Duchess of Cambridge' has not described her everyday title for four years.

A Royal and NFL Moment With Real Reach

The mix-up matters because the audience is enormous and the two families already overlap. William appeared on New Heights, the podcast hosted by Jason Kelce and his brother Travis, in July 2026, chatting with the brothers months before Kylie extended her own invitation. Not Gonna Lie debuted at the top of the US podcast charts in December 2024, dethroning Joe Rogan.

Kelce, a former field hockey player herself, kept the door open. 'Let me emphasise that I would love to speak to the Princess of Wales,' she said, listing their shared sport and parenthood as reasons.

Whether Catherine ever takes the seat, Kelce has handed millions of American listeners a quick lesson in royal etiquette, showing how a casual title slip can prompt a wider explanation of royal convention.
