Prince William and Kate Face 'Incredibly Draining' Harry and Meghan Dilemma After Sussexes' Return to UK

Prince William and Kate Middleton are facing renewed pressure over their relationship with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle after the Sussexes' return to Britain has brought the family rift back into sharp focus.

While the Prince and Princess of Wales have continued with their public duties and family priorities, Harry and Meghan's decision to establish a longer-term base in the UK means the estrangement is no longer playing out at a distance.

Royal commentators have suggested the development could create fresh public pressure on William and Kate over how they respond to the Sussexes in future. The couple's approach has been to remain focused on their own responsibilities rather than allow the dispute to dominate their public lives.

Harry and Meghan's UK Return Puts Pressure on William and Kate

Harry has previously made clear that he wants to repair his relationship with William, but PEOPLE reported that mistrust between the brothers remains unresolved.

One palace source said the situation had been difficult for William and Kate and that William's caution was understandable.

Royal historian Amanda Foreman described the relationship as having shifted from open conflict to a much colder standoff, while noting that the family may still be required to appear together at major occasions.

Royal author Simon Vigar said William and Kate's approach has been to remain focused on their own responsibilities rather than allow the dispute to dominate their public lives.

That strategy was evident when William and Kate appeared together on 10 September to promote William's suicide-prevention initiative. Foreman also said they would face questions about when they would make up with William's brother. Russell Myers similarly believes the Sussexes' unexpected return has created an issue William and Kate did not anticipate.

He said: 'William and Catherine can maintain that their focus has to be about them and their family, but there will be pressure on them about how they interact with Harry and Meghan and their family in the future.'

A reconciliation between William and Harry currently appears unlikely, with PEOPLE reporting that the brothers remain estrangedand have had no direct contact. Myers has also claimed William does not envisage having a relationship with the Sussexes in either a private or working capacity.

Reports have previously suggested that William does not want Harry and Meghan staying near his family, including claims that Windsor Castle would not be made available to them. The reports reflect the continuing depth of the disagreement, although Kensington Palace has not publicly confirmed the private family dynamics.

Tensions were also reportedly heightened after King Charles hosted Harry, Meghan and their children at Highgrove in July. The meeting was followed by renewed attention on the strained relationship between the brothers, although the Waleses' private reaction to it has not been publicly confirmed.

The latest complication came when King Charles issued guidance through Lord Chamberlain Richard Benyon reaffirming that Harry and Meghan remain outside the working royal family.

The letter stated that their position had not changed since they stepped down from royal duties in 2020 and described them as 'akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests'.

It also confirmed that their charitable activities are undertaken in a personal capacity, while their HRH styles remain in abeyance and are not used. The guidance confirms that the couple's return to Britain has not changed their non-working royal status.

The Sussexes were reportedly surprised by the timing of the letter, with a source saying they had not been told about it in advance.

Reports also suggest Harry and Meghan would prefer to be described as public figures rather than private citizens, arguing that their international prominence and continuing charitable and commercial work make the latter description inappropriate.
