Macklemore's 2024 protest song 'Hind's Hall' has returned to the spotlight after the rapper performed it during his opening set for Ed Sheeran in New Jersey, bringing one of his most politically prominent and controversial tracks to a major stadium audience more than two years after its release.

Macklemore performed at Sheeran's MetLife Stadium shows on 4 and 5 September 2026, where he also called for a 'Free Palestine'. The performances prompted criticism and a petition from the Israeli-American Council calling for Macklemore to be removed from the remaining dates of Sheeran's US tour.

Student protesters occupied Hamilton Hall at Columbia and symbolically renamed it 'Hind's Hall' in honour of Hind Rajab, a six-year-old Palestinian girl who died in Gaza during the war. The renamed building became a symbol of the student movement that inspired Macklemore's song.

Macklemore used the track to express his own political position on the war in Gaza and US policy towards Israel, directly connecting the song to the campus protests.

Macklemore's Message in the Lyrics

The track is an overtly political protest song. Macklemore criticises US support for Israel, addresses Palestinian civilian suffering and calls for a ceasefire.

He also directly criticises then-US President Joe Biden and American policy towards Israel, while defending students protesting on university campuses.
