Unilever ended Thursday 16 April as the biggest gainer on the FTSE 100 which slumped to 7,060.45 overall. The consumer goods company reported promising sales growth figures for the first quarter.

Publishing company Pearson and drinks group Diageo were among the biggest losers for the day, dropping 4% and 3.6% respectively.

Pearson saw troubles at one of its educational tech projects in Los Angeles while Diageo witnessed a decline in sales over the first quarter.

The blue-chip FTSE 100 had reached a new high of 7,119.35 points but ended the day 0.5% down overall.
