Almost 21 years after Demi Moore caused a stir by posing naked for Vanity Fair while she was seven months pregnant, Jessica Simpson is following in her footsteps.

The heavily pregnant 31-year-old singer has stripped down to her birthday suit for the latest issue of US Elle and revealed that she is expecting a baby girl.

In an interview with the magazine, she explains that she hopes that her daughter will follow her into fashion.

But she admitted to a nagging worry that the girl might take more after her sporty dad, Eric Johnson.

"I swear I will croak if she asks me for a pair of Nikes instead of Christian Louboutins,"she told the magazine.

"Eric is so athletic - we're gonna have this athletic girl and I won't even be able to take her shopping cause all she's gonna want is sports bras and Nikes."

In the cover image Simpson cradles her baby bump while protecting her modesty.

Although the couple have remained tight-lipped about what they will name their child, Simpson describes the chosen name as "non-traditional".

"It's nothing shocking and nothing you'll have to add to the dictionary. Still, when people hear it, they'll know why," she teased.
