The veteran Malaysian rock musician died after collapsing mid-performance at the Teruntum Rock Festival in Kuantan, Pahang, on Saturday, July 18. His death has left fans and fellow musicians mourning a man remembered for his decades-long dedication to music and his close ties to his family. Tributes have poured in across social media from those who grew up listening to Meditasi's music during the 1990s rock era.

Who Was Raja Azreen Raja Talib?

Raja Azreen Raja Talib was remembered not only as a musician but also as a devoted son. He chose not to marry and instead dedicated much of his life to caring for his elderly mother, Raja Amnah Raja Othman, according to reports about his family.

His older brother, Raja Azman Raja Taib, has also spoken publicly about his sibling's final weeks and his recent health struggles. Raja Azreen was a longtime member of Meditasi, joining the Malaysian rock group around 1990, after the band had recorded its first album. He was not a founding member of the group, as some reports have suggested.

Meditasi rose to prominence during the golden era of Malaysian rock in the 1990s. Their hits included Bidadari, Hukuman Pada Pesona and Biar Pedih Kasih Memanjang. The band later reunited in 2015 after being inactive for a period.

Away from music, Raja Azreen owned a bicycle shop in his hometown of Kampung Gali Hilir in Raub, Pahang, and remained passionate about BMX cycling. He had reportedly competed in a BMX event shortly before his final performance, according to Malay-language newspaper Berita Harian.

Moment Drummer Collapsed on Stage

Meditasi were performing the second song of their planned 10-track set at the Teruntum Rock Festival when Raja Azreen suddenly slumped over his drum kit. Frontman Bakaruddin Daud, known as Burn, immediately rushed to his bandmate's side.

'I rushed towards him, but I could feel that he was gone,' Burn told Berita Harian. 'I called and patted him, but there was no response. His body was already cold. The fans were quite alarmed when they saw what was happening.'

Band members carried Raja Azreen backstage and an ambulance arrived within minutes. He was taken to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital, where he was given respiratory assistance but did not regain consciousness.

His brother, Raja Azman, later confirmed the drummer had received respiratory assistance at the hospital but never responded after the collapse. He also told Berita Harian that Raja Azreen had suffered heart problems before his death.

What We Know About the Drummer's Final Weeks

According to Berita Harian, citing Raja Azreen's brother, the drummer had recently been diagnosed with diabetes and had been hospitalised twice in June because of heart problems. One of those hospital stays reportedly lasted two to three weeks before he was admitted again.

Raja Azman suggested that extreme fatigue, after a recent BMX competition, may have taken a toll, though no medical evidence has confirmed this as a factor in his death. Burn, the frontman, recalled that the drummer had appeared very thin before the show and had been careful about his diet after his diabetes diagnosis.

Despite his recent health issues, Raja Azreen reportedly showed no obvious signs of illness before taking the stage. He had rehearsed with Meditasi for three days ahead of the festival and appeared to be in good spirits, according to Berita Harian.

Meditasi was originally formed in 1983 under the name Metal Wizard before later becoming known as Meditasi. The group became associated with Malaysia's 1990s rock scene and reunited in 2015, continuing to perform for fans years after their initial rise to prominence.

In an eerie detail recalled after his death, Burn said Raja Azreen had specifically requested the band dress in black for the festival and had insisted the concert should continue regardless of what happened. The drummer had apparently made the comment because guitarist Rosli Ahmad was also unwell at the time, saying 'the show must go on'.

The official cause of death has not been confirmed by hospital authorities. The band has not made a final decision about its long-term plans, though Burn indicated the musicians intend to carry on in Raja Azreen's memory. He told Berita Harian: 'We have not yet discussed the future, but we will continue the group's struggle. Because as he said, the show must go on.'

Raja Azreen's death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from Malaysian music fans and fellow musicians. He is survived by his mother and siblings.
