From Semiconductors to Financial AI: How Tamanna Kottwani Builds for Complex Industries

A borrower applying for a credit-union loan may wait days without knowing whether the application is progressing, what information is missing, or when the money will arrive. Faced with uncertainty, the borrower may give up and turn to a fintech or megabank that promises a faster answer, even if the loan costs more. A difference of $100 a month amounts to $1,200 a year, roughly a month's rent for many American households.
Tamanna Kottwani has built her career around closing that gap between what technology promises and what people experience. At Clutch, where she is the Head of Product, her organization has helped make it possible for a qualified borrower to move from application to a funded credit-union loan in minutes rather than days. Delivering that experience requires far more than a faster screen: identity verification, lending policy, relationship data, fraud controls, documents, signatures, and funding must work together across systems that were rarely designed to communicate. "The hard part is rarely making one piece of technology work. The hard part is making the entire system work for the customer, the employee, and the institution at the same time," she says.
That ability to turn fragmented, complex operations into experiences that work for customers and institutions has defined Kottwani's career across semiconductors, enterprise software, digital marketplaces, and financial technology. She has repeatedly been drawn to industries where the customer sees a simple interaction, but the organization must coordinate systems, policies, physical operations, and human decisions behind it.
Kottwani studied electronics engineering at VJTI in Mumbai, graduating at the top of her class. Her early work in robotics taught her to think in systems: electronic sensors, mechanical components, and software modules need to work beyond the college lab in real-world conditions. That perspective became commercially consequential at Texas Instruments, where she was one of nine candidates hired across India into a selective leadership-development program in Dallas.
Her work connected customer strategy with technical product decisions across medical devices, telecommunications, energy, and financial infrastructure. Drawing on deep customer empathy, she influenced specification changes to a billion-dollar microcontroller product line. The changes helped drive millions of dollars in additional revenue across Asia and contributed to her recognition as the Best Sales Performer at TI India.
"Customer insight is valuable only when it changes the product. My role has often been to translate what customers are experiencing into decisions that engineering and business organizations can act on," she says.
Texas Instruments also shaped how Kottwani thought about adoption. She worked with customers on products that required long qualification cycles, technical review, and coordination across multiple global organizations. Technical performance was only one part of product success; the product also had to fit the customer's systems, decision processes, and day-to-day work.
After earning her MBA from the Wharton School, where she received the Joseph Wharton Fellowship, Kottwani moved fully into software product leadership. At Microsoft, she helped make mobile a core part of Yammer's employee-engagement strategy as work increasingly happened away from a desk.
Yammer, now part of Microsoft Viva, was used by employees at major global companies, including frontline and deskless workers who did not regularly sit at computers. Kottwani led the transformation of its iOS and Android applications from secondary companions to the desktop product into comprehensive employee-engagement platforms.
She later presented the new Yammer mobile experience at Microsoft Ignite 2019 and helped shape the strategy to extend Yammer across mobile surfaces within Microsoft 365. The work reinforced a lesson she had learned in hardware: enterprise products succeed when they fit the tools, locations, and moments in which people already work.
Her next role at Instacart introduced a different form of complexity. Kottwani was selected as the founding product manager for Ready Meals, a new business intended to move Instacart beyond traditional grocery delivery. She was not taking over a mature product; she was being asked to determine whether an entirely new category could work and then build the systems required to launch it nationally. She took the product from an idea to more than 4,100 stores across 35 states within five months.
Bringing deli meals online required far more than placing a menu inside an app. Prepared meals and traditional grocery shopping involve different expectations and operational constraints. A customer may accept waiting four hours for a grocery order, but not for lunch. The digital experience also had to reflect what was available inside physical stores. Store employees needed workable processes, while customers expected accurate information and reliable fulfillment. "A polished screen cannot rescue a broken process," she says. "The experience and the operation have to be designed together."
At Clutch, Kottwani applied that principle to an industry where operational failure can affect a person's access to money. She joined the fintech company in 2022 as its first product hire, established Product Management and Design functions, and led Clutch from one primary lending product into an integrated portfolio spanning lending, deposits, automated fulfillment, embedded protection, and AI-powered servicing and collections, within institutions where an error is not merely a bug ticket, but potentially a compliance event. Four years later, the platform serves 165+ credit unions, including six of the ten largest in the country. Its customers collectively represent nearly $500 billion in assets.
The scale shows the environments in which Kottwani's product decisions must perform. Credit unions were chartered to serve people of modest means and now serve 144.7 million Americans. Yet they compete with megabanks and modern fintechs while operating with a fraction of their technology budgets. Kottwani's role is to build products that work within those regulatory, systems, and operational constraints while remaining usable for institutions and members. For her, the consequence is not merely operational efficiency: a fragmented process can mean that an approved borrower waits days for money, abandons the application, or turns elsewhere for more expensive credit.
Her career now places her at the center of another transition as financial institutions move from AI assistants that answer questions to systems that complete bounded work.
"AI is not exempt from the rules of adoption. It still has to understand the workflow, operate within permissions, leave an audit trail, and know when a person should take over," she says.
The products show how Kottwani's career has progressed from influencing individual components to shaping complete operating systems. HAL, an AI lending agent, collects most required loan documents with no staff involvement and only rarely needs to hand a conversation to a person. Emma, an AI voice collections agent, placed more calls in three weeks at one institution than a single collector completes in years, while routing cases requiring judgment or care to employees.
In 2024, Amplitude named Kottwani to its global Product 50, covered by VentureBeat, in the Best Product Leader, Startup & Small Company category. The recognition reflected a career in which each industry added another layer to her understanding of how technology becomes usable at scale.
"Hardware taught me to respect physical constraints. Enterprise software taught me that behavior shapes adoption. Retail taught me to see the operational work behind every digital transaction," Kottwani says. "What connects all of it is the belief that the customer should not have to carry the complexity of the system."
That belief now guides her work in financial AI, where removing complexity can change not only how quickly a transaction moves, but whether someone can access money when they need it.
