The UK government is preparing to release the first batch of internal documents tied to the appointment of Peter Mandelson as Britain's ambassador to Washington.

According to reports, these records are expected to revisit the long-scrutinised relationship between Mandelson and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The so-called 'Mandelson files,' set to be presented in Parliament after Prime Minister's Questions, include Cabinet Office vetting reports that reportedly warned of 'serious reputational risk' tied to Mandelson's past friendship with Epstein.

The disclosures come months after Mandelson's dismissal from the diplomatic post and weeks after his arrest in a separate police investigation.

What the Mandelson Files Are Expected to Reveal

The documents being released were ordered by Members of Parliament earlier this year following pressure on the government to explain how Mandelson's appointment was approved in 2024 despite public knowledge of his past connection to Epstein.

According to parliamentary sources, the first tranche will include:

  • Internal Cabinet Office due diligence reports
  • Communications about Mandelson's diplomatic vetting
  • Risk assessments related to Epstein's conviction and public reputation

Darren Jones, Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister, is expected to outline the release during a statement in the House of Commons. Officials say only material cleared by police investigators will be published initially, with tens of thousands more pages potentially released later to avoid interfering with an ongoing criminal probe.

The files could shed light on what the government knew and when, about Mandelson's links to Epstein before he was chosen to represent the United Kingdom in Washington.

Friendship With Epstein Cost Mandelson His Reputation

Mandelson's association with Epstein dates back to the early 2000s, while he served as a senior Labour figure under Tony Blair.

During that period, Mandelson reportedly encouraged Blair to meet Epstein and later visited Epstein's private Caribbean island, Little Saint James. Epstein also paid for several of Mandelson's flights.

The relationship remained in place even after Epstein faced criminal charges in Florida. When Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008 to soliciting prostitution from a minor, Mandelson sent emails expressing personal support and urging him to 'fight for early release,' according to later disclosures.

Mandelson has since said he believed Epstein's claims of innocence at the time and now regrets the association.

Allegations of Leaked Government Information

The controversy deepened in 2026 after newly released US Justice Department files alleged Mandelson shared confidential British government information with Epstein in 2009 while serving as business secretary under Gordon Brown.

Documents reportedly included details about economic policy discussions, government asset sales and other sensitive matters from the financial crisis era.

British police launched an investigation into possible misconduct in public office. On 23 February 2026, Mandelson was arrested at his London home, questioned by investigators and released on bail. Authorities have not filed charges, and Mandelson has denied any wrongdoing.

Madelson's Political Fallout

Despite earlier warnings about Mandelson's ties to Epstein, Keir Starmer nominated him as ambassador to the United States in December 2024.

The appointment quickly became controversial after documents linked to Epstein's estate surfaced in 2025, revealing previously undisclosed communications between the two men. Starmer dismissed Mandelson from the diplomatic role in September 2025, saying he had been misled about the extent of the relationship.

The fallout has continued into 2026. Mandelson resigned from the Labour Party and the House of Lords earlier this year, while Starmer's government has faced criticism over its vetting process.

Hence, the first release of documents could be only the beginning.
