Inside the Cisco Patents That Huawei, Oracle, and Verizon Could Be Building On

When a competitor cites your patent in their own filing, it can be a specific kind of acknowledgement: a record that may suggest your invention was foundational enough to build on.
Three US patent filings naming Vimarsh Puneet as an inventor have collected at least twelve forward citations combined, from companies including Huawei, Oracle, Verizon, Arista Networks, and Rockwell Automation.
Solving a Problem Zero Trust Couldn't Ignore
Patent 10,887,175 addresses a specific technical conflict.
Network Address Translation, a standard method that lets thousands of internal devices share a small pool of public IP addresses, also hides a device's true identity from network security systems downstream.
That creates a problem for identity-based security models: a policy server cannot enforce rules tied to a specific user or device if NAT has made that traffic look anonymous. Puneet's patent gives a policy server a way to recover that identity information and apply the correct security policy despite the translation.
The patent family has drawn at least six forward citations. According to the patent records, it is cited in a Rockwell Automation filing for securely deploying security policy through NAT systems in industrial control environments.
Kyndryl, the IT infrastructure company spun off from IBM, cited it in a media exfiltration prevention system. Arista Networks, a direct Cisco competitor in enterprise networking, cited it for hierarchical NAT filtering rules.
Two Chinese patents, from Huawei Cloud Computing and New H3C Technologies, cite it for message processing and terminal authentication methods respectively.
When Competitors Could Build on Your Work
Patent 10,454,882 covers a different problem: how to deliver DHCP, the protocol that assigns IP addresses to devices on a network, at the scale required by a software-defined network fabric spanning an entire enterprise campus.
The patent uses overlay networking and anycast addressing to make address assignment work across thousands of devices as if they were part of one unified system, a foundational piece of what allows Cisco Software-Defined Access to provision a campus network without manual, building-by-building configuration.
This patent family has drawn citations from five external patent families.
Oracle cited it for managing virtual private network endpoints in cloud environments. Ciena Corporation cited it for zero-touch provisioning of network elements through NAT gateways, a capability used by telecommunications service providers.
Huawei Technologies and Alibaba Group each cited it in separate Chinese patent filings covering network configuration systems. Verizon cited it for a system that exchanges user capability information across different carrier networks.
A third patent application, covering a power-management system that automatically cuts power to inactive Power over Ethernet ports, has drawn a citation from Canon in Japan, extending the citation record to a third country and a fourth industry beyond networking and telecommunications.
The Quiet Infrastructure of Modern Networks
Forward citations do not carry the visibility of a product launch or an industry award, but in patent law, they can function as a durable record of technical influence. A citation may mean a separate company's legal team determined that a later invention builds on, or must work around, the cited patent, a process that involves scrutiny a press release does not.
'The real constraint isn't the model, it's the data,' Puneet said, describing the deeper pattern behind his networking work generally rather than any single patent.
The identity-based NAT policy problem and the DHCP overlay problem both trace back to the same underlying challenge: making network infrastructure legible enough, at scale, for automated systems to reason about it reliably, whether those systems are security policy engines in 2019 or AI agents in 2026.
The citation record spans three countries and industries as varied as industrial automation, cloud infrastructure, telecommunications, and consumer electronics.
That range is one measure of how foundational a piece of infrastructure work has become: not how many people know your name, but how many separate industries may have had to account for your patent before building their own.
Patents may not often be evaluated on this basis outside of legal and licensing disputes, where forward citations matter directly to questions of prior art and infringement risk.
For a body of work built inside a single company's product line, a citation record that reaches Chinese, Japanese, and American competitors across four distinct industries is a different kind of evidence than a product award or a press mention.
It may reflect decisions made by opposing legal teams, not marketing departments, about what technical ground had already been claimed.
