Best VPN for Watching UK TV Abroad in 2026

ExpressVPN is a strong option for UK viewers travelling abroad who want a VPN with UK server locations, broad device compatibility and streaming-focused features. It lists BBC iPlayer, ITVX and Channel 4 among the services it supports.

Its apps make connecting to a UK server straightforward, whether you're using a laptop, smartphone or compatible streaming device. However, individual streaming platforms can still block VPN connections, so access to specific programmes is not guaranteed.

ExpressVPN at a Glance

Why UK Viewers Need a VPN Abroad

Going abroad can mean leaving more than your usual routine behind. For UK residents travelling for work, taking a holiday or spending an extended period overseas, it can also mean losing access to familiar television services.

BBC iPlayer, ITVX and Channel 4 operate within geographical licensing arrangements that affect where their content can be streamed. A programme available at home may become inaccessible when you connect from another country.

A virtual private network (VPN) routes your internet traffic through a server in a location of your choice. Connecting through a UK server gives your connection a UK-based IP address, which can affect how websites and streaming platforms determine your location.

ExpressVPN offers UK server locations and promotes compatibility with popular British streaming services. Its Lightway protocol is designed to provide fast, stable connections, while its applications cover a broad range of computers, phones and streaming devices.

For travellers who want a straightforward VPN with UK connectivity, these features make ExpressVPN worth considering.

Why Choose ExpressVPN for UK TV Abroad?

The main attraction of ExpressVPN for UK streaming is its combination of UK server locations, streaming compatibility and device support.

UK Servers and Streaming Support

ExpressVPN lists UK server locations and promotes compatibility with BBC iPlayer, ITVX and Channel 4. Its support resources explain how to connect to appropriate server locations when using streaming services.

The provider says its network spans 113 countries and includes servers with 10Gbps and 40Gbps capacity. These high-capacity connections are intended to help manage network demand, although individual performance depends on several factors.

For travellers, the practical advantage is having a provider that offers UK connectivity alongside support for everyday streaming devices.

Lightway Protocol for Streaming Performance

A VPN can introduce additional network overhead, potentially affecting video quality or loading times.

ExpressVPN's Lightway protocol is designed to deliver fast, stable connections while reducing the friction associated with connecting and switching networks. This can be particularly useful when moving between hotel Wi-Fi, mobile data, and other internet connections.

Actual speeds will depend on your location, internet service, device, and chosen server. Nevertheless, performance-focused protocols are an important consideration when selecting a VPN for video streaming.

Support for Multiple Devices

ExpressVPN supports Windows and Mac computers, iOS and Android devices, Fire TV products, Android TV and compatible routers.

Its current subscription tiers also support multiple simultaneous connections, making the service useful for individuals or households with several devices.

Whether you prefer watching a programme on a laptop in your hotel room or using a compatible streaming device on a larger screen, ExpressVPN offers several ways to establish a VPN connection.

What UK Streaming Services Can You Watch With ExpressVPN?

BBC iPlayer

BBC iPlayer offers live television and on-demand programming, including dramas, documentaries, entertainment and news.

For UK viewers travelling abroad, losing access to familiar BBC programmes can be frustrating. ExpressVPN lists BBC iPlayer among the streaming services it supports and provides UK server locations through its application.

To try the service, connect to a UK server before opening BBC iPlayer. If playback fails, check your connection and consult ExpressVPN's current troubleshooting guidance.

Important: BBC iPlayer's published terms restrict streaming and downloading its television programmes outside the UK. Check the applicable terms before attempting to access the service while abroad.

ITVX

ITVX brings together ITV's television programming, including reality shows, dramas, documentaries and live broadcasts.

ExpressVPN advertises compatibility with ITVX and offers UK server locations that may be relevant to viewers travelling overseas.

The usual setup involves connecting to a UK server and then opening ITVX on a compatible device.

However, ITVX actively enforces geographical restrictions and identifies VPN use as one reason playback may be unavailable. A UK VPN connection therefore does not guarantee access.

Channel 4

Channel 4 offers a varied catalogue of British entertainment, reality television, documentaries and drama.

ExpressVPN lists Channel 4 among the streaming services it supports. Its UK servers provide a potential connection option for viewers who want to watch the platform while travelling.

As with BBC iPlayer and ITVX, availability depends on the streaming platform's restrictions and its ability to identify VPN connections.

How to Set Up ExpressVPN for UK TV Abroad

Getting started is relatively straightforward. The precise menus may differ by device, but the process generally follows these six steps.

1. Choose an ExpressVPN Plan

Visit the provider's website and select a subscription that suits your needs. ExpressVPN offers Basic, Advanced, and Express Pro, with prices varying by plan, subscription length, and market.

Review the renewal price and refund conditions before purchasing.

2. Download the App

Install the ExpressVPN application on the device you intend to use.

Supported options include Windows and Mac computers, iPhones, iPads, Android phones and tablets, and selected streaming devices.

3. Sign In to Your Account

Open the application and sign in using your account credentials or the activation method provided.

The app allows you to browse available server locations and establish a VPN connection.

4. Select a UK Server

Open the server-location list and choose a UK location.

Once connected, ExpressVPN routes your internet traffic through the selected VPN server. This changes the IP address visible to websites and services, although it does not guarantee that a streaming platform will accept the connection.

5. Open Your Streaming Service

Launch BBC iPlayer, ITVX or Channel 4 on your preferred device.

Sign in to your existing account if required and select the programme you want to watch.

On computers, a browser may be convenient. On mobile devices and compatible streaming hardware, the platform's official application may be the better option.

6. Troubleshoot Connection Problems

If playback does not work, confirm that ExpressVPN is connected and that your internet connection is functioning normally.

You can also try another available UK server or consult the provider's troubleshooting documentation. Streaming platforms periodically block VPN-associated IP addresses, so compatibility may change.

ExpressVPN offers customer support to help users resolve connection and setup issues.

Ready to Set Up Your VPN?

ExpressVPN combines UK server locations with applications for computers, smartphones and selected streaming devices.

Its 30-day money-back guarantee for eligible new customers provides an opportunity to evaluate the service under the provider's applicable refund terms.

Can You Use ExpressVPN on a Smart TV?

Watching UK television abroad does not necessarily mean using a laptop.

ExpressVPN offers applications for compatible streaming devices, including Amazon Fire TV products and Android TV. It also supports certain router configurations, which can extend VPN connectivity to devices that cannot run a VPN application directly.

There are three main options to consider:

• Native VPN application: Install ExpressVPN directly on a compatible streaming device and connect to a UK server.
• VPN-enabled router: Configure a compatible router to route connected devices through the VPN. This can be useful when several devices need VPN connectivity.
• MediaStreamer: Use ExpressVPN's Smart DNS service on compatible devices where a conventional VPN application is unavailable.

MediaStreamer is not a VPN and does not provide the same encryption and privacy protections. Device compatibility and streaming performance can also vary, so check the relevant setup instructions before choosing an approach.

Is ExpressVPN Fast Enough for Streaming?

Connection speed is an important consideration when choosing a VPN for television streaming.

ExpressVPN says its network includes 10Gbps and 40Gbps servers and that its Lightway protocol is designed to provide fast, stable connections.

However, advertised server capacity should not be confused with the speed an individual subscriber will experience. Your actual performance depends on your internet connection, distance from the server, network congestion, and device.

For example, someone connecting to a UK server from a nearby European country may experience different performance from someone streaming from Asia or the Americas.

A few practical measures can help:

• Use a reliable internet connection.
• Try another UK server if the connection is unstable.
• Use a compatible device and keep its software updated.
• Avoid unnecessary background downloads when bandwidth is limited.

ExpressVPN's Fastest Location feature, available on supported mobile applications, considers factors such as speed, latency, and distance when suggesting a server.

These tools can help you find a suitable connection, although no VPN can eliminate every performance limitation.

ExpressVPN Pricing: What Should UK Users Expect?

ExpressVPN offers three main subscription tiers: Basic, Advanced, and Express Pro.

Pricing depends on the subscription duration, promotional offers, and the market in which you purchase the service. Introductory rates may also differ substantially from renewal prices.

For UK customers, it is best to consult the provider's official pricing page and confirm the amount displayed in pounds before subscribing.

When comparing plans, consider the following:

For someone primarily interested in a VPN connection for streaming, the central considerations are server availability, device compatibility, performance, and price.

The higher subscription tiers include additional products and features beyond the core VPN service. Whether those extras justify the difference in cost depends on your requirements.

ExpressVPN advertises a 30-day money-back guarantee for eligible new customers. Purchases made through Apple's App Store or Google Play may be subject to the relevant stores' refund processes.

Privacy and Security While Streaming

A VPN can provide benefits beyond accessing familiar services while travelling.

ExpressVPN says it encrypts internet traffic and masks the user's IP address. The company also states that it does not retain activity logs or connection logs that would identify users' browsing activities.

Its privacy claims have been subject to independent assessment. An ISAE 3000 report published by ExpressVPN describes an assessment of its VPN infrastructure and logging controls.

The company also promotes Lightway as part of its security architecture. The protocol uses the wolfSSL cryptography library and has undergone independent security assessments.

These features can be relevant when connecting through hotel, airport or café Wi-Fi, where users may prefer an encrypted connection for their internet traffic.

A VPN is not a complete security solution, however. It does not automatically prevent phishing, malware infections, account compromise, or tracking through cookies and logged-in accounts.

For travellers, the strongest approach is to combine a reputable VPN with updated software, strong passwords and multifactor authentication wherever possible.

Is It Legal to Watch UK TV Abroad With a VPN?

Using a VPN and using one to bypass a streaming platform's geographical restrictions are two different matters.

VPNs are widely used for privacy and security, but streaming services operate under territorial licensing agreements that determine where particular programmes can be shown.

BBC iPlayer's published terms restrict streaming and downloading its television programmes outside the UK. ITVX states that its service is UK-only, subject to specific provisions for certain downloaded content available to eligible subscribers, and its terms prohibit attempts to circumvent geographical restrictions.

A TV Licence is also required for BBC iPlayer use under the applicable UK licensing rules.

ExpressVPN states that subscribers are responsible for complying with applicable laws and third-party terms.

Before attempting to stream abroad, check the current terms of the relevant platform and any applicable licensing requirements. A VPN connection does not override those conditions, and streaming access is never guaranteed.

A VPN can affect connection speeds because traffic travels through an additional server. ExpressVPN's Lightway protocol and high-capacity network are designed to support fast connections, but actual performance depends on your internet connection, location, device and selected server.

Is ExpressVPN safe to use on public Wi-Fi?

A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN server, helping protect data in transit on public networks. However, it does not eliminate every online threat. Keep your software updated and use strong passwords and multifactor authentication.

The Bottom Line
