The Royal family's bank, Coutts, has an image as an old legacy bank but according to one of the Women in the City award winners, Joanna Thornell, the group has a very modern approach to the recognition and promotion of female talent.

Speaking to IBTimes TV about her award win within the Financial Services category, Thornell described how it is an honour to be recognised in this way.

"I believe strongly in both the power of diversity in business but also the great contributions women can make," said Thornell, managing director at Coutts.

"Role models at a senior level are essential, but it is the support and development we give individuals as they build their career which will support sustainable change.

"I hope this award will inspire other women to continue to pursue their ambitions while recognising you don't have to be superwoman to do so."

Thornell leads over 250 people and is responsible for the delivery of the banking service to the UK client base.

She is also a champion for diversity in the business and has led the successful delivery of the first Diversity Week at Coutts which focused on education, awareness and open debate across a variety of themes.

As business sponsor of the Coutts Women's Network, she promotes the development and retention of female talent at all levels as well as supporting the activities of the Young Leaders Forum and ensuring collaboration across networks.
