Beth Ditto, the lead singer of the US indie rock band Gossip, has been arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

The star, whose real name is Mary Beth Patterson, was detained after she was refused service at the Bungalo Bar in Portland.

According to the Williamette Week, a witness said that Ditto was told by bar staff that she could not have any more alcohol because she was drunk.

She "walked out in the middle of the street, threw off her shoes and purse and screamed Obama! Obama!" as friends arrived to bundle her into a car.

"The cops came," said a witness. "Ten or 12 cars."

They had been called out to reports of a graffiti artist defacing a wall near the bar when they caught sight of Ditto and moved in on her.

A Reddit website user described the singer as being "completely blackout drunk, challenging people to fights" while she was in the bar.

She was arrested and faces a charge of disorderly conduct, which carries a six-month jail and a fine of up to $2,500 (£1,600).
