A federal grand jury on Thursday (June 27) indicted accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on charges of killing four people in the largest mass-casualty attack on U.S. soil since September 11, 2001.

"The indictment alleges that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is responsible for the deaths of Krystle Marie Cambell, Lingzi Lu, Martin Richard, and Officer Sean Collier, and also for maiming, burning, and wounding scores of others," United States Attorney Carmen Ortiz told reporters at a news conference in Boston. "Today's charges reflect the serious and violent nature of the events that occurred on April 15, and the tragic series of events that followed."

The 30-count indictment filed in Boston federal court also charges the 19-year-old ethnic Chechen with setting off two homemade pressure-cooker bombs in a crowd of thousands at the race's finish line and with committing a carjacking and engaging in a fierce gun battle with police prior to his April 19 arrest.

Tsarnaev faces the possibility of execution if convicted. His public defender, Miriam Conrad, declined to comment on the charges, which cover a four-day period that traumatized the Boston area.

Ortiz made a point to state that the charges in the indictment were allegations, and that Tsarnaev is entitled to the same rights as any U.S. citizen.
