Authorities in Hays County, Texas, have arrested a 45-year-old man following a violent altercation that erupted during a student-led demonstration earlier this week. The Buda Police Department confirmed that Chad Michael Watts, a resident of Kyle, was taken into custody on Tuesday after investigators identified him as the 'primary aggressor' in a clash with students.

Watts has formally been charged with two counts of assault causing bodily injury following the disturbance. The confrontation unfolded during a student walkout, a lawful demonstration that took a turn when Watts allegedly became involved in a heated argument with a female student that quickly escalated into physical violence involving several individuals.

Altercation at Student Walkout

The incident occurred on Monday in Buda, a town situated just south of Austin. According to police reports, students had gathered near the intersection of RM 967 and FM 1626 to exercise their right to peaceful protest.

Tensions flared when Watts allegedly approached the demonstrators and engaged in a verbal argument with a girl on the sidewalk.

Witnesses state that the dispute spiralled from a verbal exchange into a physical melee involving multiple people. Video footage circulating on social media platforms appears to capture the chaotic scene, showing the aftermath of the scuffle as Watts retreated to his pickup truck.

Following a review of the evidence, including witness statements and video recordings, Buda Police determined that Watts initiated the physical confrontation. 'Violence or intimidation directed at a minor — particularly during a lawful, peaceful demonstration — has no place in a constitutional republic that depends on the rule of law rather than force,' Judge Becerra stated. He emphasised that the community must prioritise the safety of vulnerable groups, adding, 'I will not be silent when children exercising their constitutional rights are placed at risk.'

Buda Mayor Lee Urbanovsky also weighed in on the matter, describing the event as an 'emotionally charged and sensitive issue' that has caused significant concern within the community. He noted the deep impact such incidents have on local residents, highlighting the distressing nature of a conflict involving minors.
