A Minnesota man has admitted killing and dismembering his pregnant sister after deciding she was 'no longer innocent', a motive prosecutors described as deeply disturbing as they seek a life sentence in one of the state's most harrowing family murder cases.

Jack Joseph Ball, 24, pleaded guilty to premeditated first-degree murder and premeditated first-degree murder of an unborn child during a court hearing on 21 January, according to the Dakota County Attorney's Office. Prosecutors immediately recommended a life term in prison as part of the plea agreement.

Guilty Plea and Charges

Ball admitted responsibility for the death of his sister, Bethany Ann Israel, 30, who was pregnant at the time she was killed. A second-degree murder charge initially filed in the case was dropped following the plea.

According to the report by US Magazine, Ball had previously asserted a defence of mental illness, a claim the state plans to challenge at a trial scheduled for 21 May. He remains in custody at the Dakota County Jail.

Chilling Motive Revealed in Journals

Investigators said several journals recovered from Ball's home outlined his anger over his sister's pregnancy.

In those writings, prosecutors said, Ball claimed Israel was 'no longer innocent', a belief that became central to the state's case and set the killing apart from other domestic homicides.

Timeline of the Killing

On the night of her death, Israel went to her brother's home in Lakeville for dinner. When relatives were unable to reach her hours later, concern grew. Their mother drove to the house to check on the siblings and arrived just as Ball was seen fleeing the property.

After entering the home and seeing large amounts of blood, she called emergency services.

Graphic Scene Inside the Home

Police responding to the call reported finding pools of blood on the kitchen floor beneath the sink and on nearby cabinets. Prosecutors said officers recovered multiple tools, including large knives, a saw and a hatchet, all covered in blood. Additional knives were found in the living room near the staircase.

Dismembered body parts were discovered throughout the home, underscoring the brutality of the attack.

Neighbour's Doorstep Discovery

Shortly after officers arrived, a resident in nearby Rosemount called 911 after reviewing home security footage. The caller reported seeing a man place what appeared to be a body part on their front step.

Police conducted a brief search and found Ball hiding in the backyard of a neighbouring property. He had suffered a self-inflicted injury to his neck and was taken to a local hospital for treatment before being arrested.

Arrest and Legal Proceedings

A grand jury indicted Ball on 9 January 2025. Following his hospital treatment, he was transferred to jail to await further court proceedings.

Prosecutors said the evidence recovered from the scene, including blood-soaked tools and written journals, formed the basis of the first-degree charges.

Prosecutors Describe a 'Horrific' Case

Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena said the allegations were among the most disturbing her office had handled.

'The allegations in this case are deeply disturbing and horrific. Words can't describe what our law enforcement partners encountered during the investigation,' Keena said. She added that prosecutors would work to ensure justice for both Israel and her unborn child while supporting the family through the legal process.

If accepted by the court, the plea agreement would see Ball spend the rest of his life in prison for the killing that shocked the Lakeville community and left investigators confronting a crime driven by an extreme and deeply personal belief.
