Doja Cat Admits She Has 'Struggled With Cocaine' and Drinking in a Series of Candid TikTok Videos
The singer discusses her journey to healing and the impact of social media on mental health

Doja Cat has said she previously struggled with cocaine and alcohol, while insisting she was never an 'alcoholic', in a series of candid TikTok videos about substance use, mental health and the impact of social media.
The 30-year-old rapper and singer made the disclosures on Monday, 31 August, saying she was initially fearful about discussing the subject publicly but felt compelled to speak as part of her 'journey to healing'.

She also addressed people online who have described her as 'demonic' or claimed she has 'demons' and 'evil' in her, connecting those comments to a wider discussion about alcohol, drugs, mental illness and online criticism.
'The best example for my experience is using the internet as a means of validation to the negative thoughts in my head which were then brought on by drinking alcohol,' Doja said.
She added that she had not considered herself to have a serious drug problem apart from marijuana, but acknowledged that alcohol had caused difficulties.
'I was never an alcoholic but I definitely had problems,' she said, warning people against combining alcohol and drugs with harmful online influences.
Doja Cat's Cocaine Disclosure
In another TikTok posted the same day, Doja addressed her past cocaine use more directly.
'I have struggled with cocaine,' she said, adding that she believed it could have been about eight years ago. She then stressed that the period was in the past, saying she was 'well past that' and thanking God.
Doja did not say in the videos that she currently uses cocaine or alcohol. Her comments instead focused on past experiences and what she said she had learned from them.
The distinction is important because she specifically rejected describing herself as an alcoholic while acknowledging that alcohol had been a problem.
She also discussed the way social media can reinforce negative thoughts, particularly when people are already dealing with mental-health difficulties.
Her 'Demonic' Comments
Doja said people should consider the effect that hostile online comments can have on someone already struggling with their mental health.
'If people are commenting stuff that makes you hate yourself or validates the stuff that you already hate about yourself, just know that first of all, you probably need help – second of all, they probably need help,' she said.
She encouraged people to consider whether their comments were projections of their own feelings before reacting to others.
'Think about what you're saying, think about if it's a projection,' she said. 'Be clear in your words – this isn't a place where people want to be clear. Not everything is the truth, not everything is so cut and dry.'
She connected her comments about demons and evil to her wider discussion of addiction, mental health and online behaviour.
Doja Cat and Mental Health
The disclosures follow Doja's previous public discussions about her mental health.
On 13 March, she revealed that she had been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD), describing the condition as 'agonising' and saying she had been in therapy for years. She also said she was proud of the progress she had made.

Her latest comments should not be treated as a clinical assessment of her substance use. Doja was describing her own experiences and specifically said she was not an alcoholic.
That distinction is important when reporting on addiction and mental health. A celebrity's description of past substance use should not be turned into a medical diagnosis without supporting evidence.
Doja Cat's Planned Break From Fame
The disclosure also comes as Doja considers stepping away from music for an extended period.
In an interview for ELLE UK's June issue, she said she was considering taking 'three years off' after completing her current work, allowing time for personal projects and a creative reset. The issue went on sale on 14 May.
She remains scheduled to perform. The North American leg of her Tour Ma Vie World Tour is due to begin on 1 October in Detroit, followed by dates across the United States and Canada before the tour concludes in December.
For now, however, her latest TikTok videos have shifted attention away from her music and towards what she says she has learned from difficult periods in her life.
Doja has acknowledged past problems with alcohol and said she struggled with cocaine roughly eight years ago, while stressing that she is now 'well past' that period.
Her broader message was about the relationship between substance use, mental health and social media — and the danger of using online criticism to reinforce negative thoughts.
For a performer who has spent years navigating intense scrutiny online, the disclosures offer a rare glimpse into the personal experiences behind that public pressure.
