Is a Fourth Stimulus Cheque Coming in 2025? Here's Why You Shouldn't Hold Your Breath
Federal support continues through tax credits, Social Security adjustments, and state-level rebates

As of July 2025, millions of Americans are still searching for updates on a possible fourth stimulus cheque. Viral posts and speculative headlines have stirred hope for a $2,000 direct payment, especially among low- and middle-income households.
But despite the online buzz, there is no official confirmation that another federal stimulus check is on the way. Here's what we know, what's still available, and what Americans can realistically expect in 2025.
No Official Fourth Stimulus Approved in 2025
There is currently no legislation passed by Congress to approve a fourth federal stimulus check in 2025. The last round of official Economic Impact Payments, commonly referred to as stimulus checks, ended in 2021. Since then, the IRS has issued reminders that all deadlines to claim any remaining payments have passed.
Much of the current speculation appears to come from social media posts, misleading YouTube videos, and financial blogs referencing out-of-context information or unrelated local benefits. The IRS and the Department of the Treasury have not announced any new stimulus packages for 2025.
Why a Federal Fourth Check Is Unlikely
Several factors make another stimulus check improbable in 2025. Job growth remains strong across key sectors, reducing the urgency for large-scale emergency aid. At the same time, as report by CNN, inflation has cooled compared to previous years, though it continues to affect household budgets in areas like housing, food, and utilities.
Perhaps most importantly, there is a clear lack of political momentum in Congress to introduce new direct relief packages. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have shifted their focus toward deficit control and long-term economic policy rather than short-term spending measures.
Stimulus checks were implemented in response to an unprecedented global crisis during the COVID-19 pandemic. With emergency declarations lifted and the economy showing signs of gradual recovery, federal policymakers are now prioritising sustainable growth strategies over additional one-time payments.
What Federal Support Is Still Available in 2025?
While a fourth stimulus check is off the table, several federal support programs remain active in 2025 to help eligible Americans manage financial pressures.
Expanded Tax Credits
The Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) remain two of the most important sources of federal relief for families in 2025. While the expanded child credit from the American Rescue Plan expired, eligible families can still claim up to $2,000 per child under the current law.
Low- to moderate-income earners may also qualify for the EITC, which can provide over $7,000 in credits depending on income and family size. These are not automatic payments but are claimed through annual tax filings.
Social Security and SSDI Adjustments
Recipients of Social Security, SSDI, and SSI saw a 3.2% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in January 2025. This means slightly higher monthly benefits throughout the year, though the increase is modest compared to inflation seen in recent years.
SNAP and State-Level Benefits
Millions continue to receive monthly SNAP (food stamp) benefits through the USDA. While pandemic-era emergency allotments ended in 2023, regular benefits have been adjusted slightly in 2025 based on cost-of-living data.
Additionally, some states are offering one-time rebates or tax relief, including:
- California: Middle Class Tax Refunds issued through mid-2024
- Pennsylvania: Property tax/rent rebates for seniors and disabled residents
Eligibility and deadlines vary, and residents are encouraged to check with their state tax agencies.
