Is Justin Bieber French? Wife Hailey Bieber Insists Canadian Husband Is, Leaving French Host Confused
The singer is Canadian by nationality but has French-Canadian ancestry, prompting confusion during Hailey's appearance on French talk show Quotidien

Hailey Bieber has left a French television host visibly confused after insisting that her husband, Justin Bieber, is French, despite the singer being famously Canadian.
The bizarre exchange took place during Hailey's appearance on the French talk show Quotidien on 30 September, where she was promoting the expansion of her beauty brand Rhode into France through Sephora. While discussing her affection for Paris, Hailey suddenly declared: 'My husband is French, so I love that as well.'
Host Yann Barthès immediately appeared surprised and asked whether Justin was really French. Hailey confidently replied: 'He is French. Yes.' When Barthès pointed out that Justin was Canadian, she doubled down, explaining that he was 'from Canada but he's also French' because 'his family is French'.
Hailey Bieber Insists Justin Is French
The conversation became even more awkward when Barthès tried to establish exactly where Justin's supposed French connection came from.
According to reports of the exchange, Hailey eventually admitted that she was 'not totally sure' where in France his family was from. Barthès jokingly told her to let him know when she found out, leaving the audience with a memorable moment that quickly spread across social media.
The clip has since attracted millions of views and sparked a debate over whether Hailey was confusing French nationality with French ancestry.

Justin Bieber Is Canadian
There is no real mystery about Justin's nationality. He was born in London, Ontario, in 1994 and grew up in Stratford, Ontario, Canada.
Justin has consistently been identified as Canadian throughout his career and has spoken proudly about his home country. His mother, Pattie Mallette, does, however, have French-Canadian ancestry, meaning Hailey's comment appears to have some basis in Justin's family background.
That distinction is important because being descended from French Canadians is not the same as being French by nationality.
Maternal Family's French-Canadian Heritage
Justin's maternal family has roots in French-speaking Canada, including Quebec and Acadian communities. His family history can ultimately be traced back to French settlers in North America, while he also attended French-language immersion schools growing up.
So, if Hailey meant that Justin has French ancestry or French-Canadian heritage, her statement was not completely without foundation. The problem was the wording. Calling someone 'French' in a French television interview normally suggests that the person is from France or holds French nationality. Justin does not fit that description.
French and French-Canadian Are Not the Same
The distinction has become the main point of the online debate. Some social-media users argued that Hailey simply used 'French' as shorthand for her husband's ancestry. Others, particularly people familiar with French and Canadian identities, said that calling a Canadian man 'French' because of distant ancestry was misleading.
The reaction was especially strong because the clarification happened on French television, with Barthès seemingly trying to understand exactly what Hailey meant. Reddit discussions also showed users debating whether the singer should instead be described as French Canadian.
Why Was Hailey Talking About Justin's Heritage?
Hailey's comment came while she was praising France during her Quotidien appearance. She spoke about her love of Paris, particularly its fashion, romance and atmosphere, before bringing Justin into the conversation.
The Rhode founder's appearance coincided with the brand's European expansion, making France an important part of her business trip. Her comment appeared to be more about explaining her personal connection to France than making a formal statement about Justin's citizenship. Still, her repeated insistence that he was French made the moment difficult for viewers to ignore.
The Internet Cannot Stop Talking About It
The exchange has produced plenty of jokes, with some viewers describing the moment as awkward while others defended Hailey by pointing out Justin's French-Canadian roots. Ultimately, the answer is fairly simple: Justin Bieber is Canadian by nationality, but he has French-Canadian ancestry.
Whether that makes him 'French' depends on what Hailey meant by the word. In France, however, the distinction between nationality and ancestry is clearly what left the host — and much of the internet — scratching their heads.
