The diplomatic quarter in Riyadh is in chaos after a series of Iranian drones successfully struck the American embassy, sparking massive fires across the compound. This unprecedented assault on the Saudi capital has prompted an immediate, ominous warning from Donald Trump, who promised a rapid retaliation against Tehran.

As smoke rises over the city, the sudden escalation between these global powers has ignited widespread fears that a third world war may be imminent.

Chaos in the Diplomatic Quarter

Early on Tuesday, the American mission in Riyadh became the latest regional target for suspected Iranian drone strikes. These aerial attacks follow a series of retaliatory moves from Tehran triggered by recent Israeli military operations.

Dark plumes of smoke spiralled over the Riyadh diplomatic quarter as a powerful explosion tore through the US embassy grounds. Footage uploaded to social media captured the ferocity of the blaze, highlighting the sheer scale of the destruction caused by the strike.

Those on the ground told Reuters that large plumes of dark smoke were seen rising over the district, which is home to many international missions in the Saudi capital. This strike follows a series of Iranian attacks triggered by Israeli military operations, a move that has pushed regional instability to a breaking point.

Saudi Arabia Reports 'Limited' Damage

Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Defence confirmed on Tuesday morning that the American embassy was struck by two drones, leading to what officials called a 'limited fire' and slight structural harm. A spokesperson for the ministry stated that, according to preliminary reports, the mission in Riyadh was targeted by a pair of unmanned aircraft, though the resulting blaze and overall impact on the building remained minimal.

A spokesperson for the defence ministry stated that early evaluations showed no significant destruction at the site.

Emergency Shelter Orders Issued

Following the strikes, the US Mission to Saudi Arabia announced it had issued a 'shelter in place notification for Jeddah, Riyadh and Dhahran and are limiting non-essential travel to any military installations in the region.' In a post shared on X, the mission advised that 'We recommend American citizens in the Kingdom to shelter in place immediately.'

The assault on the Riyadh compound follows a similar strike against the US Embassy in Kuwait only 24 hours earlier. These back-to-back incidents point to a rapidly spreading wave of Iranian attacks that is now destabilising the entire Gulf region.

IRGC Admits Targeting 'Political Centres'

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it has launched a campaign to eliminate 'American political centres' throughout the Middle East. 'The explosion at the Washington embassy in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, is a move in this direction,' the IRGC shared via Telegram.

The strike on the American mission in Riyadh is just one of several US military and diplomatic sites that Iran has recently targeted.

Trump Warns of 'Ominous' Consequences

In light of the drone strikes on the American mission in Riyadh, US President Donald Trump warned Tehran on Tuesday that Washington intends to deliver a powerful response. 'You (Iran) will soon find out Washington's response to the attack on its embassy in Riyadh and to the killing of American soldiers,' Trump said. 'I don't think deploying ground forces will be necessary in Iran,' the American leader remarked.
