Manchester United are reportedly expected to press ahead and try to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, despite being close to a deal with Southampton for Morgan Schneiderlin.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils are close to completing a deal for the French midfielder, with only the fee yet to be agreed to, with the south coast club.

Louis van Gaal has made it clear that signing a deep lying midfielder is a priority this summer, as he seeks a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick. The Englishman put in some authoritative performances for the club under the new manager, but missed a big chunk of the last campaign through injury and the Dutch manager is keen to address it ahead of the new season.

The United manager has previously worked with the German international during his time as the manager for Bayern. It was during that stint that Van Gaal converted Schweinsteiger into a midfielder, and is now reportedly keen to be reunited with the player at Old Trafford.

In what will come as a boost to the 20-times English champions, according to the Sunday Times, the promise of regular football in England could tempt the German midfielder to opt for a move to the Premier League this summer.

Schweinsteiger, who has spent his entire career at the Allianz Arena, is currently out-of-favour under Pep Guardiola. He has fallen down the pecking order due to new arrivals and made just 15 starts in the Bundesliga last season.

The 30-year-old midfielder wants to play regular football next season, as he is keen to lead Germany into Euro 2016 in France next year and is aware that he needs to be playing on a weekly basis to achieve that feat.
