Sheriff Under Fire For Snubbing Cajun Navy's Drone Support For Nancy Guthrie Search
The search process has drawn criticism after Sheriff Chris Nanos delayed authorising additional resources.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos is facing mounting public and internal pressure after reportedly 'stonewalling' an offer of specialised search assistance from the United Cajun Navy (UCN).
The Louisiana-based nonprofit, known for its expertise in high-stakes disaster response and missing person searches, submitted a comprehensive 41-page operational plan to the Pima County Sheriff's Office (PCSO) in late February 2026.
The plan reportedly details the deployment of dozens of search dogs and advanced drone technology to sweep the rugged terrain surrounding the Catalina Foothills. However, as of 5 March 2026, Sheriff Nanos has yet to sign off on the proposal, citing concerns over 'contaminating' a live criminal investigation.
This friction occurs as the investigation into the abduction of Nancy Guthrie—mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie—shifts into a more analytical phase. While the 'boots on the ground' presence has dwindled, four PCSO detectives and a sergeant have been formally assigned to a joint task force operating out of the FBI's Tucson field office.

The search for Nancy Guthrie has stretched on since she was first reported missing on 1 February, with public updates arriving in fits and starts as leads are checked and discarded.
In the past day, one apparent break has also collapsed as DNA from black gloves found about two miles from Guthrie's home was traced to a local restaurant worker who, the sheriff's department said, has no connection to the case.
Why Nancy Guthrie Resources Are Being Reordered
NewsNation reported that four detectives and a sergeant from the Pima County Sheriff's Office have been assigned to a task force with the FBI to keep working the investigation into Nancy Guthrie's disappearance.
According to the same report, the team will be stationed at the FBI office in Tucson, with the case reaching day 32 without any confirmed sign of Guthrie's whereabouts.
Sheriff Nanos has meanwhile projected confidence, telling NBC News that investigators are 'definitely closer' to tracking down a suspect or suspects, while also conceding there are still key things they have not identified.
One of those unresolved threads is a vehicle spotted in publicly circulated Ring camera footage, which Nanos said investigators are aware of and are examining like any other evidence.

Pressed on whether the vehicle captured at around 2.36am had been identified, Nanos answered 'No,' adding that investigators are looking at that car alongside 'hundreds of thousands of other vehicles that were travelling at that hour.'
If that sounds both diligent and maddening, it is because it is meant to be both. Police do not promise certainty until they have it, and the public rarely gets to see the slow, repetitive work that produces it.
What Nancy Guthrie's Cajun Navy Offer Actually Contains
Alongside the shift to the FBI task force, NewsNation has obtained what it describes as a 41-page operational plan sent by the United Cajun Navy to Sheriff Nanos, offering to help search for Nancy Guthrie.

NewsNation says the group has been trying for almost a week to get the sheriff to sign off, and that it does not want to start searching without that approval. In a segment, its senior national correspondent Brian Entin described the plan as potentially involving dozens of dogs and drones and framed the central question bluntly. Why has the sheriff not agreed?
The Cajun Navy's broader pitch has been described elsewhere as volunteer search-and-rescue support offered to Arizona authorities in the Guthrie case, with the group saying it can provide resources to help bring her home.

There is, in other words, no shortage of willing hands. The friction point is control, and more specifically, who gets to put assets into the field when there is still a live investigation that could be compromised by well-meaning mistakes.
The FBI has said that while investigators collected about 16 gloves from near the home, most of the other gloves in the area belonged to searchers who discarded them during efforts in the vicinity.
The Nancy Guthrie DNA Setback And Limits Of Evidence
The gloves have now become a cautionary tale in miniature, and CBS News reported that the sheriff's department traced the DNA to an employee at a nearby restaurant who is not considered part of the investigation.
A department spokesperson told CBS News that lab analysis of additional DNA evidence remains underway, keeping the door open to future developments while offering no comfort in the present.
CBS also reported that the sheriff's department has sent DNA evidence to a private laboratory in Florida rather than the FBI lab in Quantico, with Nanos saying his agency has used that Florida lab for years and he did not want samples going to two different facilities.
The choice may be entirely practical. It also adds to the sense, fair or not, that the case is being pulled in multiple directions while the central fact stays fixed, that Nancy Guthrie has still not been found.
