Woman, 26, Dies After Taxi Collision on Aigburth Road as Driver Arrested on Drug-Driving Suspicion

A 26-year-old woman has died after being struck by a taxi on one of Liverpool's busiest commuter routes. Merseyside Police have arrested the driver on suspicion of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving and on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drugs.

Officers were called just before 5.40pm on Wednesday, 2 September, to reports of a collision on the city-bound carriageway of Aigburth Road, between Fulwood Road and Larkfield Road in south Liverpool.

A white Toyota Voxy private hire taxi had struck a female pedestrian, police said. She was taken to hospital but later pronounced dead.

Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers. The 41-year-old driver stopped at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving and on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drugs.

He remained in custody on Thursday as detectives from the Matrix Serious Collision Investigation Unit worked to establish what happened. The woman has not yet been named by police, and no further details about her background have been released.

Major Collision Inquiry Under Way

Merseyside Police have opened a full collision investigation that they say now hinges on dashcam, CCTV and doorbell footage from the busy arterial route.

Detective Sergeant Andy Roper, of the force's Matrix Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: 'First and foremost my thoughts and those of my team remain with the woman's family at this sad time.'

'Road death causes devastation for all those involved and it is our absolute priority to get answers for her family,' Roper added.

He confirmed an investigation had been opened 'to ascertain the circumstance of this collision'.

Officers are pursuing several lines of enquiry, including speaking to potential witnesses and examining CCTV footage.

Aigburth Road, a long route linking south Liverpool to the city centre, was busy with rush-hour traffic at the time of the crash, with buses and delivery vehicles moving alongside pedestrians.

Roper said police believed 'there would have been a large volume of vehicles including buses, taxis and delivery drivers, together with pedestrians, in the area'. He urged anyone who had not yet spoken to officers to come forward.

Police Urge Witnesses To Check Footage

Roper appealed directly to motorists and residents, saying: 'I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or was travelling in the area at the time with a dashcam fitted to their vehicle to make contact with our team.' He added: 'We want to check if it has captured anything which may provide answers surrounding this collision.'
