A seven-year-old girl and her aunt have died in a devastating house fire near Middlesbrough, with police investigating the blaze as a murder and examining whether it could be linked to a deadly A66 crash that killed seven people days earlier.

Valentina Foster, seven, and her 34-year-old aunt Natalie McDonald died after the fire broke out at an end-of-terrace property on Birchington Avenue in Grangetown in the early hours of Wednesday. Emergency services were called to the property at around 5.23am after reports of a fire.

Two Men Arrested

Two men, aged 23 and 31, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody. Cleveland Police has launched a murder investigation but stressed that officers are keeping an open mind about what happened.

Superintendent Emily Harrison said police could not rule out possible links to wider organised crime as detectives worked to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Four other people were injured in the blaze. A 48-year-old woman remains in hospital in a critical condition, while three other people suffered injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Fire Near Deadly A66 Crash

Seven people were killed in that collision, including Cleveland Police officers Matthew Blades, 37, and Tom Clough, 38.

The officers died when a Volkswagen Passat travelling in the wrong direction on the dual carriageway collided with their marked police vehicle. Five people travelling in the Passat were also killed.

Organised Crime Investigation

The circumstances surrounding the A66 crash have already triggered a major police investigation into suspected organised criminal activity.

Police had received reports of dangerous driving in the area before the crash, while a separate vehicle was reportedly seen ramming properties.

Reports say one of the properties targeted belonged to the father of teenager Cole Worthy, who was among those killed in the collision.

Possible Link Between Incidents

The latest house fire has raised questions about whether the incidents could be connected. However, police have not confirmed a direct link between the blaze and the A66 crash.

Cleveland Police has also urged people not to speculate while investigators establish what happened. The force said it would maintain a high-visibility presence in Grangetown as detectives continued their work and to reassure residents following the deaths.

The wider investigation comes amid growing concern about criminal activity in the Middlesbrough area. Authorities have made multiple arrests following the A66 crash, with investigators examining possible links to organised crime.

Tributes have been paid to both victims. Natalie McDonald was described by her mother Lisa Kirton as a 'beautiful, bubbly person who everyone knew', while Valentina was remembered as a young girl whose death has devastated her family.

As residents mourn Valentina and Natalie, investigators face the difficult task of piecing together what happened inside the Birchington Avenue property and whether the tragedy forms part of a wider chain of events that has already claimed nine lives in the area.
