A baby boy was killed and a toddler seriously injured in a dog attack in Colchester, Essex police said.

The wounded boy was left with "life-changing injuries" after the attack, and a woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries after being bitten by the dog, said police in a statement.

An Essex police spokesman said the boy killed was aged four months old, and the injured boy one year and eight months old. Police did not disclose the age of the woman injured.

Emergency services were called to an address in Harwich Road at 3.10pm on Thursday, 13 October.

Chief Inspector Elliot Judge said: "This is a tragic incident that Essex police is investigating. Specially trained officers are providing support to the family at this difficult time."

Officers removed the dog from the property after the attack, which was subsequently destroyed with the consent of the owner, said a police spokesman.

Police have not dislosed the breed of dog.
