Overview

Marin made it to the semi-final after she managed to beat South Korea's Sung Ji-hyun in the last eight of the Women's event. The 23-year-old had no trouble in making her way into the semis as she defeated her opponent in straight sets in the previous round.

The quarter-final fixture between Marin and Ji-hyun went in the Spanish star's favour as she won the match 21-12, 21-16. Marin will be targeting for another straight set win to confirm at least a silver medal in Rio and a place in the final.

However, she has to overcome Xuerui, who is the defending Olympic champion, having won the gold in the London 2012 Olympics. The 25-year-old Chinese star will be hoping to make it to another Olympic final.

The clash between Marin and Xuerui is going to be an exciting one, considering the form in which both the badminton stars are at the moment. Xueruie defeated Thailand's Porntip Buranaprasertsuk in straight sets to make it to the last four. The final score was 21-12, 21-17.
