MLB player Mitch Voit has found himself at the centre of an unexpected social media storm after the New York Mets prospect was named the organisation's Minor League Player of the Year.

The 21-year-old infielder's baseball achievements have been impressive throughout 2026. But footage of Voit discussing the honour with SNY has attracted a different kind of attention, with viewers focusing heavily on his distinctive appearance.

The Mets announced on Sunday that Voit had been named their 2026 Player Development Player of the Year. Left-handed pitcher Jonathan Santucci was selected as the organisation's Pitcher of the Year.

Voit was selected by the Mets with the 38th overall pick in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft after three seasons at the University of Michigan.

He made a significant leap during his first full professional season. Voit began 2026 with High-A Brooklyn before receiving a promotion to Double-A Binghamton on 27 July.

At the time of the promotion, he had appeared in 76 games for Brooklyn and posted a .242 batting average, .349 on-base percentage and .745 OPS. He also had 11 home runs, 41 RBIs and 36 stolen bases.

His performance improved markedly after moving up to Double-A. In 29 games for Binghamton following the promotion, Voit hit .347/.430/.517, with two home runs and 18 RBIs.

Mets Prospect Goes Viral for His Appearance

Voit's success was celebrated in an SNY interview after he received the organisation's top player-development honour.

Speaking about the recognition, Voit credited his family for helping him throughout his young career.

'That's incredible and it's really a moment for me to share with my family. They have been my support staff this whole time so, I'm just incredibly proud to have them here and share this moment with them,' Voit said.

However, viewers on social media quickly shifted their attention towards Voit's appearance.

One person wrote: 'Bro looks like the lazy town villain after half a year of looksmaxxing.'

Another joked: 'looking like deuce from shake it up 😂.'

A third viewer added: 'That dude is not real!'

Another commented: 'Damn why the hell he looks like a Ken from Barbie? 😭'

Someone else compared him to a fictional baseball character, writing: 'Looks like Disney hired someone to play Alex Rodriguez in a Disney baseball movie.'

The comments were largely tongue-in-cheek, with the unusual reaction to the clip overshadowing the achievement Voit was discussing.

Rising Prospect Has Major Future Ahead

Away from the viral attention, Voit's development is the more significant story. He was already regarded as one of the Mets' leading prospects when he was promoted to Binghamton. MLB Pipeline ranked him fifth in the organisation at the time.

His arrival in Double-A immediately generated excitement. During his first series, Voit hit .500 with a .593 on-base percentage and a 1.502 OPS across six games. He recorded six extra-base hits, five RBIs, 10 runs and three stolen bases. He also produced a career-best four-hit, five-RBI performance during that opening week.

Voit's 2026 campaign ultimately demonstrated the combination of speed, discipline and offensive upside that attracted the Mets to him in the draft.

For now, however, the prospect may be better known to some fans for his viral appearance than his game.
