Elon Musk Reportedly Texted About 'Anomaly in the Matrix' Before 2024 US Election, Film Reveals

Elon Musk reportedly sent cryptic messages about an 'anomaly in the matrix' and 'ten thousand lasers in space' before the 2024 US election, according to Alex Gibney's documentary 'Musk,' which is scheduled to premiere at the Venice Film Festival on 8 September.

The claims come from Ashley St. Clair, the mother of one of Musk's children, who appears in the film. St. Clair says Musk displayed a 'degree of certainty' about a Trump victory before the election result was called that she 'had never seen before.'

In the film, St. Clair says Musk told her before the election that he was going to unleash the 'anomaly in the matrix.'

The documentary then displays what it presents as a text exchange between the two, including a message attributed to Musk that reads, 'I have ten thousand lasers in space.'

In a documented exchange, filmmaker Alex Gibney questioned whether Elon Musk was referencing his Starlink satellite network, prompting Nick St. Clair to reply, 'I mean, I don't know where else he has space lasers.'

Media reports based on advance screenings of the film noted that the dialogue leaves viewers to evaluate whether the messages were intended as a provocation or signalled something more significant.

The documentary does not establish what Musk meant by the messages or whether they were connected to the 2024 election outcome.

Musk's 2024 Political Spending

Musk spent an estimated $291 million on Republican candidates, political action committees and other outside political spending during the 2024 election cycle, much of it in support of Donald Trump and Republican causes, according to reports.

That figure represents his total election-cycle political spending and should not be characterised as money given directly to Trump's campaign.

DOGE Data Allegations Raise Separate Questions

The film also raises allegations about DOGE personnel's access to sensitive government data, including Social Security records involving hundreds of millions of Americans.

Gibney told reporters that the documentary does not establish what DOGE or Musk did with data to which they had access. He alleged that a source who had run IT at a major federal agency, along with whistleblowers and public accounts, revealed that DOGE personnel had extensive administrative access to federal IT systems.

Gibney alleged that such access could theoretically have allowed government data to be copied to SpaceX. He did not establish that Musk or SpaceX actually received any such data.

The documentary also cites a whistleblower complaint filed by Charles Borges, then the Social Security Administration's chief data officer. Borges alleged that DOGE personnel uploaded a copy of a large SSA database to a vulnerable cloud environment. The SSA has disputed claims that its data was accessed or leaked.

The film does not establish that Musk personally accessed or used the data. Instead, it raises a hypothetical question about the privacy risks associated with broad access to government IT systems.

A Portrait of Power, Motive and Uncertainty

'What is Elon building, what are his goals, what are his actual motivations, and do we even know this man at all?' Gibney asks in voiceover, framing the text messages as part of a wider inquiry into Musk's ambitions and influence.

The film arrives amid continued scrutiny of Musk's political spending, his role in DOGE and his ownership of social media platform X. Reports said that Musk was 'freaking out' over the documentary's impending release.

For viewers, the takeaway is less a smoking gun than a nagging question: how much power is too much when one person can fund campaigns, command satellite networks, and potentially access government data?

Wild, maybe. But the question of simulated reality is hardly new for Musk; he has publicly argued that humanity may be living in a computer simulation.
