Roy Hodgson has named uncapped Southampton pair Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez in his England squad for the upcoming friendlies against Chile and Germany.

Both players have been integral to the south-coast club's rise to sixth in the Premier League table, with Rodriguez bagging four goals this term while Lallana has been in fine form.

"(Manchester United forward) Danny Welbeck has been injured - I see in Rodriguez someone who could fill that Welbeck role," said Hodgson.

"He's a wide forward who likes to go forward and attack people even without the ball and get in the penalty box."

Rodriguez, 24, had applied for a plumbing course as a teenager before making the grade at Burnley where his 41 goals for the Lancashire side secured him a £7m move to Southampton.

Speaking of Lallana, Hodgson added: "Adam was with us once a long time ago. We saw him in training, we have been following him closely and he played a major part in [Southampton's] rise to the top. It was quite obvious we would pick him."

Meanwhile, Jordan Henderson, 23, who has played in all 10 of Liverpool's league games, received a surprise recall to the national team and Joe Hart, dropped by Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini, is included in the 28-man squad.

England face Chile on 15 November and the old enemy Germany four days later. Germany qualified for next year's World Cup unbeaten in Group C while Chile secured passage as one of four sides from the South American qualifying group following a 2-1 win over Ecuador.

As predicted, Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster is included in the squad and will be expected to challenge Hart for the number one shirt while Norwich City's John Ruddy is included as England's third goalkeeper.

Hodgson has stuck by Hart despite a series of errors that have resulted in him losing his place in the City starting eleven for the games against Norwich and CSKA Moscow.

"I don't think he'll start both (games) because it is important for me to look at one of the other two, possibly both," said the England manager.

"But I can say Joe will definitely start one because he is our number one goalkeeper. I would guess more likely Germany than Chile, but I wouldn't like to be held to that."

Arsenal's midfield maestro Jack Wilshere receives a call-up despite worries over his ankle injury while teammate Kieran Gibbs is also included in the squad.

Andros Townsend keeps his place after starring against Montenegro and Poland while Ross Barkley is expected to receive a run-out in the double-header.

Hodgson has pledged to rotate his team for both games to afford the younger members of the squad a chance to impress before his final 23-man World Cup squad is announced in June next year.

There were rumours that Luke Shaw, Ravel Morrison, Wilfried Zaha or James Ward-Prowse would win call-ups to the senior squad but all have been included in Gareth Southgate's Under-21 squad to face Finland and San Marino.
