Bollywood stars Deepika Padukone and Farhan Akhtar were the toast of Filmfare Awards 2014 which was held in Mumbai on 24th January. Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's (Rang De Basanti, Dilli 6) biopic Bhaag Milkha Bhaag starring Akhtar as the 'Flying Sikh' bagged the top awards including best actor, best director and best film.

Mehra recalled his previous walk down the red carpet with his first film, the Amitabh Bachchan starrer Aks:

"Winning a Filmfare is such a proud moment. In fact Amitabh Bachchan had recalled during Aks how he used to join the crowd outside Shanmukhananda Hall in the '60s just to watch the stars arrive for the awards," he said, as per a report in Times of India.

Mehra also said that he welcomed criticism, referring to the 1-2 odd reports that surfaced earlier questioning the film's authenticity.

"I welcome criticism, it is always better than exaggerated praise and points a mirror to your faults," he said.

Deepika Padukone took home the best actress trophy for her performance in the film, Ram Leela, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Even though Shahrukh Khan's 2013 monster hit Chennai Express didn't get any of the popular awards, it did manage to bag the Sony Trendsetter of the Year Award. Previously, Ranbir Kapoor starrer Barfi had won this award.

Chennai Express was nominated in most top categories categories including best film, director (Rohit Shetty), actor (male and female) and music. Other films which received the maximum nominations were Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Ramleela, Raanjhanaa, Kai Po Che, Aashiqui 2, Krrish 3 and last year's sleeper hit, The Lunchbox.

The show's top highlights including on-stage performances by Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit and Katrina Kaif. Jai ho star Salman Khan also showed his 'award show-friendly' side by engaging in some red carpet banter.

The event was hosted by Priyanka Chopra and Ranbir Kapoor.
