Hunter Biden is reportedly planning to launch his own crypto meme coin under the ticker $LAPTOP on 9th September on the Base digital ledger that was developed by Coinbase Global.

The son of former US President Joe Biden posted a short compilation clip on X highlighting the sensation that followed after the discovery of his computer in 2020. Device content, ranging from details about his foreign business deals, became a major controversy ahead of the 2020 presidential election.

In separate X posts, Biden had also described decentralised digital assets as the 'inevitable future' and even weighed in on the dispute between the Trump family's crypto venture World Liberty Financial and Chinese-born entrepreneur Justin Sun.

The founders of $LAPTOP will hold 30% of the total 1 billion token supply, which will be locked for six months and will vest fully in two years, according to The Wall Street Journal. Another 20% of the token supply will be sent to crypto wallets of victims who lost money on the $TRUMP meme coin, subscribers to Biden's Substack, and a mailing list created by journalist Andrew Callaghan.

However, Callaghan had reportedly clarified that he and his media company Channel 5 have nothing to do with Biden's meme coin.

The $LAPTOP token founders will reportedly destroy up to 30% of the meme coin supply only if a series of 30 events have predetermined outcomes within a stipulated time frame, which could potentially ramp up the value of the token.

Some of those outcomes include a Democrat winning the 2028 presidential election, bitcoin prices reaching another record high, and $LAPTOP's fully diluted valuation exceeding the $TRUMP meme coin. If none of the events materialise, a proportionate amount of tokens will be donated to charity.

The remaining 20% of the tokens will reportedly go to charity, used for liquidity purposes, as well as to cover accounting, legal, and compliance costs.

800K Investors Lost $2.1B on $TRUMP Pump and Dump

Remember the $TRUMP meme coin launch in early 2025 that the President himself promoted as part of his crypto push? The token soared over 1,000% in days following its launch before losing most of its value.

Chainalysis data based on a blockchain study indicated that more than 810,000 investors, including many Trump supporters, could have lost over $2.1 billion when the meme coin price crashed. Reconstruction of early trades by crypto experts revealed that some traders made major $TRUMP meme coin purchases right when the President formally announced the launch on his social media handles.

Further analysis revealed a 12-hour gap between creating the $TRUMP meme coin contract address and the official launch. Even new wallets emerged during that time frame, allegedly buying tokens in huge numbers within minutes of launch before dumping most of their holdings in the following days, raking in massive profits.

Specifically, on-chain data indicated that around 31 early large traders made over $729.8 million in total profits in the early days of the $TRUMP coin.

While Biden's new meme coin takes aim at Trump's multibillion-dollar crypto empire, potential investors should be cautious about any 'rug pull' or 'pump and dump' activity when it comes to the launch of any meme coin.

Volatility and Risks of Meme Coins in the Trump Era

As with other highly speculative meme coins, $LAPTOP could experience extreme volatility, including rapid price increases followed by steep declines.

Meme coins seldom have intrinsic value, with many in circulation having lost most of their value soon after launch. However, some like Dogecoin have remained relevant due to their affiliations with celebrities and politicians. These tokens began as a joke, such as Dogecoin, which launched in 2013, referring to the viral meme featuring a Shiba Inu.

Trump has vowed to make America the crypto capital of the world since his campaign trail in 2024. He has since then floated the idea of a nationwide crypto reserve. However, several prominent people, including major Republican-donor and hedge fund manager Ken Griffin, had mentioned that the Trump Administration's policies are enriching their families rather than serving public interest.
